Hi,

Just started using these with my 4.5 mth old DD. She is small and skinny for her age. Having a bit of a problem with (wee) leaking up the front, especially after she has been playing on her tummy.

They are new nappies, but have been prewashed a couple of times. Is this likely to affect things or do you think it's the way I've been doing them up? (I'm trying to make sure it's tight around her tummy but there is a bit difference between the size of her tummy when she pulls her legs up compared with when they are straight IYSWIM).

The nappy is on its smallest setting and the doubled over bit of the insert is at the back as Bumgenius suggests for girls.

Any tips/suggestions?
Thanks!

You may want to try moving her to the next popper setting. IIRC my DS - also skinny - moved through to the full size quite quickly and then stayed there quite happily until we stopped using them at 2.3. I found moving up popper size stopped leaks.

Failing that, try the folded bit at the front if that is where the leaks are.

thisismyname · 18/08/2010 11:22

i also go up a rise with the poppers. Smile

Agree, go up a popper size and put the doubled part of the inner at the front.

I always struggled with BGs with both DS1 and now with DS2 (16 weeks). They always always leak round the top. I can't get a good fit, not sure if it's because both DS's are skinny beans?

Secondtimelucky · 18/08/2010 11:32

I would put the doubled over bit at the front.

Also, they need waaay more than a couple of washes to get to full absorbancy. I think I did mine half a dozen times and then kept them on for only a couple of hours the first few times we used them.

I've also got a skinny baby (now 5 months) and he's been on the middle setting since about 3 months - no problems with leaks out the top.

I'd also suggest putting the doubled over bit at the frpnt (I'd also have the insert on the middle bit - my own BG are in the wash as I type so I can't check so hope that makes sense!). You could also try boosting absorbency by adding the newborn insert too.

Agree that they need more than a couple of pre-washes too. I really love my BG - they're the best ones in my collection for my skinny boy - so hope you can solve this problem Smile

I agree with popper size and also putting the doubled over bit at the front, thats what i do with DD at 3mths and we have no leaks :)

yey!

angfirsttimer · 26/08/2010 13:37

sorry to hijack, but as cheerypip has found a solution can you ladies help with my problem.

24 week old DS always leaks on his left hand side at front after about 2 hours in nappy and always if he has been sat up after a much shorter period, I am going through tons of clothes and tons of nappies a day and getting quite pee'd off TBH. They were fine until about 4 weeks ago, what is going on??

Also despite washing at 60 they are still stained, how do I get the poo out, all my inserts are a grubby yellow colour!!

SmacsGonePotty · 26/08/2010 21:24

Hi ang!
sunshine bleaches them if you can get them out on the line and if there is some sunshine. Even sitting on a window ledge with the sun shining on them works.
Are you using both inserts for DS? 2 hours is a bit short I'd expect them to last 3 hours really. I got some bamboo boosters from Little Lamb which I was using for DD1 prior to potty training to boost aborbancy and they fit really well in a BG. here
I haven't needed to use them yet for DD2 though.
I've got really soft water where I live and have never had to do a stripping wash and I've been using my BG for 2 years now but if you have hard water I think you can get a build up of detergent much quicker. Maybe a stripping wash is required?
Another suggestion: Is he wearing a poppered vest? Sometimes if they are poppered too tight they cause wicking with real nappies, maybe try a size up of vest?
oh and cheerypip I've got 2 girls and I always put the doubled up bit at the front Smile

I use my bgs on medium outer setting and small inset setting IYSWIM - this makes it much easier to get a good seal...

angfirsttimer · 27/08/2010 19:49

Thanks Smac, the sun disappeared this week, made me realise that winter won't be much fun with all this bloody washing!!

I haven't been using the boosters, the pack I bought came with the newborn/booster inserts, they seems so bulky with it in. Will try it.

Also thanks for tip re vests, I am stretching the vests to avoid having to buy more! Will get some new vests and see how it goes

Elena67 · 30/08/2010 16:30

while we're all here...! Any advice on smelly bg? Tthere's a perceptible ammonia smell and I've stripped them all (they were second hand). Any advice re soaking rather than dry pailing and / or vinegar etc?
Thanks in advance
