motherease nappies rubbing

I have an 18m ds and we're now putting the motherease cloth nappies on their largest setting, but some now-unused poppers that are turned inwards leave marks on his skin and he asks to have the nappies taken off as they're obviously uncomfortable... any suggestions?
Thank you :)

Potty training? If he is advanced enough to ask for them off rather than doing what mine does which is howl when I put them on.
I use a cut up fleece blanket as liners so I cut large pieces and I leave them poking out of the top because it helps to stop the rubbing and fleece doesn't wick that much besides you can poke it into the wee notions wrap.
Mine is 15-months.
