how many hours sleep do your 3yo get?

hello my ds has always been great with sleep and still is and there isnt a problem as such more a general wondering what others were up to. ds usually has 11 maybe 12 hrs at night. it has been less recently so we cut his nap completely. he had a 2 hr nap from 1-3 in the afternoons but then was going to sleep later and later. he seems to be doing better with getting off to sleep since his naps were cut but is always complaining of being tired during the day. should i give him just an hr and maybe earlier in the day to help him along? what do your 3yo do?

11 hours no nap during the day.

MunchMummy · 09/08/2010 13:04

11-12 hours, no naps. Even my 26 month old sleeps 12 hours with no naps. If she does have a nap in the pushchair I wake her up after 10 mins so she goes to bed easier. It sounds cruel, but they really only need a cat nap by that age and it means you get your evenings. No way would I leave them an hour to sleep!!

nikki1978 · 09/08/2010 13:07

12 hours no naps. With both mine their afternoon naps were meaning they would not go to sleep when they were 2 so I phased them out. There was a period when they were tired a bit earlier and I couldn't take them in the car after 4pm but they got used to it. I would rather have them in bed by 7.30-8 and have a evening to myself and not have them up too early than have the nap in the day.

My 3yo hasn't napped for ages! Since she was about 20m old! She goes to sleep about 8.30-9pm at night, and wakes at 7.30-8am ish. So that's about 11 hours?

My 22m old does the same but needs a nap in the day if she's under the weather and, if she's well, once a week or so.

BlueChampagne · 09/08/2010 13:09

11-12 hours no naps

pinchmeimustbedreaming · 09/08/2010 13:10

yeah thats what i thought, hes probably just getting used to it. like i said hes always slept alot going down at night at 7 and waking 6/7am sometimes even 8/8.30. i suppose the good thing is without a nap if he is tired he will lay in longer in the mornings!!! :) not for much longer though as dc2 will be her in 3 months!

12 hours nearly every night, no naps. But sometimes she naps if we've got to go in the car in the afternoon.

pinchmeimustbedreaming - I'm in the same situation as you - I'm due with dc2 in less than 3 weeks - and I'm not ready for slepless nights. DD spoils me by having a lie in nearly every morning ...

waitingforbedtime · 09/08/2010 13:26

11 hours usually. Had a nap until 3y4m but then wouldnt go to bed so they got5 cut out. He sometimes has a nap for 20 minutes maybe once or twice a week.

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 09/08/2010 13:29

11-13 no naps and goes out like a light. Odd times he falls asleep in the car.

having such a good boy on most levels i think its going to be very hard having 2. maybe the next will be just the same but with a due date around halloween im holding out much hope :o i dont need ds to sleep its certainly not for me, as im that bit more tired because of pregnancy i go to bed the same time as ds most nights. i must admit we do put off spending afternoons out as he will drop off so easily and just wont wake up for ages!

when DS was three is was pritty much the same as now really.

11-12 hours and no naps DS stopped having naps at about 15months, not me stopping him he just didnt sleep at all so i just stopped putting him down. He might have sleep in the car if we were out tho.

PuppyMonkey · 11/08/2010 12:24

11/12 hours and no nap here too. Hasn't had a nap since God knows when, also her choice not mine. She's doing 8pm bedtimes these days, out like a light. Smile

ButterpieBride · 11/08/2010 12:28

3.5 yo DD1 sleeps more than 9mo DD2 Hmm

DD1- 7pm till 7am, and a 3 hour nap about every other day.

DD2- 8pm (with a lot of fighting) till 6am, and 1 or 2 one hour naps in the day.

Sigh. So basically I end up pushing a huge child around in the pram and carrying a wide awake baby.

xkaylax · 11/08/2010 12:35

My ds sleeps 11-12 hrs a night,
However I find he drops off better at night and is less cranky if he has a nap through the day.
He usually has 1 and a half-2 hrs nap a day at around 1oclock and wakes up much happier than if he didnt nap at all. Grin

Bensmum76 · 12/08/2010 12:59

My ds, almost 3 sleeps 11 hours a night and has an hour in the afternoons. He goes to bed at 7.30pm and is asleep by 8pm.

BuzzingNoise · 12/08/2010 13:06

12 hours no naps here too.

girrafey · 12/08/2010 13:23

dd1 5 no nap when at school 1.5-2 hours in holidays and at weekends.

ds 2 years 10 months 2 hours nap and goes 7-7 most nights though taking bit longer to settle in evenings, maybe 15 mins or so.

dd2 21 months 15 mins in morning and 2 hours in afternoon. goes 7-7 at night.

some children need more sleep as my children show. they cant go without one and if cut short for any reason they have to make up for it the next day.

i would try givin 45 mins straight after lunch if i was you and make sure he has plenty of fresh air in the afternoon.
