Referencing taking too many words, help?

Writing a piece with a very tight word count

The references are taking up too many words

Can you do the floating number in mid air with the reference at the bottom? if so how??

Yes you can. Footnotes and endnotes don't count in word count. Go to insert, paragraph (I think), referencing, footnotes.

BonniePrinceBilly · 01/08/2010 08:45

It depends what your subject is and what referencing style you use. If you are using APA you can't. If Harvard then yes, foot notes. If using word there should be a facility for footnotes that numbers them automatically and brings up a space at the bottom for you.

KatyMac · 01/08/2010 08:51

Great - it's been killing me

The tutor kept saying Harvard but I thought that was the order the info was in

Should have asked sooner

Bit thrown this am as they have thrown chaos theory in.......mind blown

Katy, if you are allowed to use them (and if they don't count - mine did for my MA, even though they were at the base of the page):

You should only put a footnote after a full stop, not floating mid-sentence.

If you've referred to a text before, you don't have to write it out in full again, you can just write 'ibid.' and the page number.

Hope that helps (and hope I'm not teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, sorry!). If you're still struggling on the word count, I'm quite good at finding ways to use fewer words, willing to help if I can.

KatyMac · 01/08/2010 21:10

Thanks Littlereddragon - I haven't started yet but this is 6 & I've struggled with the other 5

This course has been a nightmare - I chose not to do something I knew about, I chose to do something different but I really regret it now

Sorry you're having a tough time. Good luck with it, let us know how it's going.

KatyMac · 01/08/2010 21:14

I get better marks as I go through the course but I just don't feel I am learning; I am just reproducing stuff for the TMAs

Ah well never mind

We use Harvard on our degree but are not allowed to use footnotes etc it has to be all in text and will count towards the word count.

How many words essay is it?
How many references do you quote?

KatyMac · 01/08/2010 21:21

500 - about 6

I can't use footnotes the tutor replied

JaneS · 01/08/2010 21:24

Ouch. That is really short. If you want a second eye on it and I'm around, that sometimes helps.

KatyMac · 01/08/2010 21:26

Thanks - when I've written it I'll CAT you

Lots of diagrams fortunately

I'm happy to cast an eye over anything if you need any further help.

I've just written an 800 word essay (to go along with 20 min presentation) and I used every word of the word count and the additional 10%. I used about 5 refs and kept them short and snappy. It is a nightmare though.

JaneS · 01/08/2010 21:40

Good luck with it. I hate word counts! I've got 95k and it still feels short.

KatyMac · 01/08/2010 21:42

Thanks - I will take you both up on that

I have galloping insecurity as I don't understand what I am doing

JaneS · 13/08/2010 12:05

KatyMac, just wondering how you are doing?

KatyMac · 13/08/2010 20:31

Slowly very very slowly

Had migraine & been left with an awful headache (2 weeks)

Due in tonight

OP posts:
JaneS · 13/08/2010 22:47

Ouch!

Good luck with it then, I hope it goes ok.

Migraines are horrible. Sad

KatyMac · 13/08/2010 22:50

1hr 13 mins left

OP posts:
JaneS · 13/08/2010 22:51

You can do it!

Still here for a bit if I can help ...

KatyMac · 13/08/2010 22:56

What do you know about Metaphors and change management

I'm wishing I never started this one

OP posts:
JaneS · 13/08/2010 22:59

I know about metaphors in the English lit sense ... other than that I suspect you've lost me, sorry. If you want, explain the issue but probably I shouldn't be disturbing you.

KatyMac · 13/08/2010 23:02

I should have 5x400 words
I have
432
404
297
244
NOTHING

Oh crap

OP posts:
JaneS · 13/08/2010 23:06

Ok, calm down. You can do this. What's the last one for which you've nothing? You're nearly there with all the rest.
