Why is there such a gender divide between ehat boys and girls wear?

I was a child in the 70s and almost all my everyday clothes were what I would condider unisex. Jeans and t-shirts in practical colours or I was particularly fond of a blue tracksuit with white stipes down the legs.

Now everything for boys is army/skateboard/skulls (no reason girls couldn't wear them, but v few do) and girls get pink and sparkly.

Why have we gone backwards?

It is a way of getting people to buy more clothes as you are not able to now pass down clothes from a brother to sister or sister to brother as the children (and many parents) expect all the clothes to be themed girl or boy now!

What they said.

DD does mostly wear DS's handmedowns, though (well, given her own way she wears DS's current clothes, but that tends not to go down well with him).
