Ok, here goes.
Coca Cola are running a promo via their Dr Pepper brand just now on facebook. It is called 'status takeover' and involves the application putting an embarrassing or funny status on your FB page.
My 14 yo dd participated and I was HORRIFIED to log into FB and see that her status read - 'I watched 2 girls one cup and felt hungry afterwards'. For anyone who doesn't know what this means, please stay ignorant, for those who do, you can imagine how I felt. This was compounded later on when a quick search through dds internet history revealed she had tried to find out what it was for herself. Thankfully, our ISP has a wonderful child filter!!
So, after various emails and phonecalls to CocaCola marketing I have been offered (quite offensively) as way of compensation, a night in a hotel and theatre tickets for the West End. Fat lot of use to me, we live in Glasgow.
So, how do I proceed? ASA? I am absolutely fizzing with rage and disgust, and want a full apology and explanation. CocaCola are saying they use outside marketing teams for different brands and it's outside their jurisdiction. Help!?

Not read the whole thread (so long!) but had to add my support for MrsR - totally support your reaction and further actions, it beggars belief that this has happened but, amongst all the debates about porn, can I just say how brilliant it is about the power of MNetters!
I am so pleased that if we all speak up, we can make a difference against the biggest multinationals.

Beware the MN!

I'm really pissed off to see so many of you engaging with these ridiculous posters Jimbo and Chiabom.

You are not going to get anywhere.

Ignore them and they will go away.

Interested in this thread?

RandomMuse very funny. Do some more. Who on earth do you think you are, and who one earth do you think we are?

I think you need a little lie-down with your teddy and a hot water bottle.

MrsR and everyone, well done. Loathe coca cola and all its permutations anyway. They never enter our house (except once in a while for bog cleaning purposes).

xstitch · 20/07/2010 15:24

I think this is one law that should definitely stay. There is such a thing as being too young.

Also FWIW I think it is a big deal because of the age of the target audience. If a consenting adult wishes to watch porn that is their decision to make. It should never be foisted on anyone. I also don't understand how the satiation of old men justifies the argument that it is not a big deal. These men were not the target audience. Every step should be taken to ensure that no other advertising agency makes the same faux pas.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 20/07/2010 15:24

bbh - CHiabom is MUCH better than Jimbo - he is at least coherent and answers questions. HE is hijaking the thread to discuss the rights/and wrongs of Porn.

Chiabom - Maybe join this thread instead -

"For example, a person with Autism has a severely different brain than someone without a mental illness"

I'm wondering exactly how much you know about the brain, chiabom, if you don't know that autism is not a mental illness.....

Chiabom · 20/07/2010 15:32

Chiabom - and why shouldn't it be illegal? There is lots of noise at the moment about starting research into the effect that porn has on developing brains, the fact that increasingly sexualised imagines may be affecting how teens see sex and "normal" sex practice. In addition to this, the growing problem that regular viewing of porn can have a desensitising effect and adversely effect the libido - an interesting article from Naomi Wolf here"

Well, I'm constantly being questioned, I'd like to ask a question to respond to your question, if you'd be so kind as to allow me to do so?

Where is the empirical evidence in this article proving that pornography is bad? Sure it's changing sexual culture, but that's not necessarily bad? Why should it be illegal? There's really nothing in that article, which is completely biased by the way, that really proves your point, it elaborates your point, sure, but zero proof what-so-ever. So if you can answer my questions, I'd appreciate it.

But in regards to your article, "Porn deadens desire." Just putting that out there, if it deadens desire, that sort of helps my point about rapists get across.

Also, I'm getting the impression from a whole lot of you that my being here isn't welcomed, mostly from the 'go away' and 'ignore him' posts, but why? I'm not doing anything particularly wrong, I see something I disagree with, I would like to debate it, I don't see a problem with that. Please don't feel I'm a malicious being here.

bibbitybobbityhat · 20/07/2010 15:35

You are hijacking the thread. Go and start your debate somewhere else. Troll.

Agree with BoF and BBH.

These is a place for these arguments but it is not here - this is a thread for MrsR and her specific situation.

Jimbo & Chiabom, I hope you stick around on MN, but perhaps it would be worth starting a new thread for your concerns?

Chiabom · 20/07/2010 15:39

"I'm wondering exactly how much you know about the brain, chiabom, if you don't know that autism is not a mental illness....."

Oh, I'm very sorry, it's a "neurodevelopmental disorder" it still deviates far from the path of the conventional brain, so sorry I used the wrong term, perhaps I should have said schizophrenia instead, the same principle applies, and that one is a mental illness

DreamsInBinary · 20/07/2010 15:39

MrsRickman - is there any more news?

Chiabom · 20/07/2010 15:42

"You are hijacking the thread. Go and start your debate somewhere else. Troll."

A troll is one who intentionally goes out of there way to annoy and aggravate people, I'm making logical arguments here, I'm legitimately discussing this. You are making useless statements against my person.

Honestly, I would start a new thread, but I honestly cannot be bothered at this point to start this entire thing over, if you do not wish to discuss this any further, simply do not reply, I'm not here to troll, I'm here to defend my point which I feel is being bastardized by the points being made in this topic.

Chiabom - You are hijacking the thread - as have others tbh - if you want to discuss this further i would be better to start a new thread , probably in amibeing_unreasonable. Post a link to it here and a link back in the new thread you can carry on where you left off.

Chiabom · 20/07/2010 15:53

SugarMousePink -

That was a rather great article, but I feel the pros pointed out in that article do outweigh the cons, though, I'll even admit, there are some cons to teenagers watching pornography, but please compare the two.

"There have been drops in crime, drops in teen pregnancy, increases in the number of kids who say they're virgins, declines in various kinds of victimization and less running away," "

These are some serious pros here that truly can't be ignored, the cons though are that teens may view sex as a purely recreational or material thing, which I guess can be bad, but it's more of a moral issue, and morality is a completely different field than science and neurological research and can't definitely defined as a 'con'

RustyBear · 20/07/2010 15:54

SugarMouse - it's already over 1200 posts, so it looks like MN are leaving this one open for the moment....

Chiabom · 20/07/2010 15:56

Fair enough, Misses and Misters and whatnot. It was nice debating the lot o' ya. Have a good day / evening.

FFS "Chelsea smile" - really?

JezBaron · 20/07/2010 16:32

Chiabom, children are children due to their innocence. If you truly believe children shouldn't enjoy a few years of ignorance before adulthood and awareness of sex, self- perceptions and disillusionment hit, then maybe you shouldn't have/ have had kids, and so shouldn't be on this site. And why would you want kids to be desensitised to the concept of sexual acts and suffering from a lack of libido... do you not want them to have normal relatinoships when they are older?!

NetworkGuy · 20/07/2010 16:39

sdia12 - if you are still lurking for comments about Coca-Cola and their campaign agency, Lean Mean Fighting Machine, rather than verbal-ping-pong going off up a cul-de-sac, then you might like to check the cached copy of the LMFM blog for
www.leanmeanfightingmachine.co.uk/blog/2010/05/the-status-takeover/

There were three entries yesterday evening but it seems LMFM has deleted the whole of May from their archive, at least while this issue is "live" perhaps because of:

*You are aware that goes against facebook Terms Of Service ? (chapter 4)

So i guess the worst it could happen is get your application banned ?*

The opening post had an image with an example message of "Sucked a mate's finger for a pound today" (ie innocent stuff) and then said

"Hand over your Facebook page to the Status Takeover from Dr Pepper. What?s the worst that could happen?

Let the toe-curling commence at bit.ly/autO7A "

I'm assuming the "Hand over ..." went out on Twitter because it includes the web link bit.ly/autO7A

The (sad) competition entrants are still "gutted" about the competition having been closed early, as per the Facebook page for Dr Pepper that bit.ly/autO7A points to.
