Ok, here goes.
Coca Cola are running a promo via their Dr Pepper brand just now on facebook. It is called 'status takeover' and involves the application putting an embarrassing or funny status on your FB page.
My 14 yo dd participated and I was HORRIFIED to log into FB and see that her status read - 'I watched 2 girls one cup and felt hungry afterwards'. For anyone who doesn't know what this means, please stay ignorant, for those who do, you can imagine how I felt. This was compounded later on when a quick search through dds internet history revealed she had tried to find out what it was for herself. Thankfully, our ISP has a wonderful child filter!!
So, after various emails and phonecalls to CocaCola marketing I have been offered (quite offensively) as way of compensation, a night in a hotel and theatre tickets for the West End. Fat lot of use to me, we live in Glasgow.
So, how do I proceed? ASA? I am absolutely fizzing with rage and disgust, and want a full apology and explanation. CocaCola are saying they use outside marketing teams for different brands and it's outside their jurisdiction. Help!?

Drew, please let me enlighten you.
To me, this is one of the big issues.
Yes, I feel strongly about the BP oil leak, the situation in Palestine, the illegal war in the middle east, sweat shops in Bangladesh. Being an informed, intelligent woman makes it impossible for me not to care about those issues.
However, I don't care about any of those things remotely as much as I care about my child. My child, not your child, not anyone else's, but mine. So, I dealt with it. And do you know what? Coca Cola listened, and Coca Cola agreed with my complaint. They have publicly admitted that I was right and they were wrong. Me, a wee mum from Glasgow. I did something.
I don't care what you think. Really, I don't. It wasn't you I was taking on, you haven't affected my life or family in any way.
I can sleep easy at night knowing that when something like this affected my family, I righted it.
Maybe you should consider taking up a cause. What do you care passionately about?
Right now I am being ridiculed for my views all over the internet. I don't care, because I was right. This is not an opinion, it's a fact.

Yeah, it's fine, you send your children to school, where they don't learn how to read and write, and get the shit kicked out of them, and have junk food and glossy magazines rammed down their throat, while you sit back and occupy yourself with small things that really don't matter, just so you don't have to look at the things that really do make a difference to your childrens lives.

StripeyMoon · 19/07/2010 13:40

Well said Mrs R.

strandedatsea · 19/07/2010 13:40

MrsR - so sorry, you must feel like you are banging your head against a brick wall with the comments that people coming on to this site because of this story are making about you not trying to protect your children!

Ignore them, there are bigger fish to fry.

dittany - this thread is about a 14 year old child.

Schools are NEVER going to show porn to those who are legally allowed to have sex with each other. As has been said above, this was a provocative article written by a teenager. Wind your neck in.

CiderIUp · 19/07/2010 13:43

Surely you're making rather a lot of assumptions about what people do with their time, Jimbo?

theyoungvisiter · 19/07/2010 13:43

Er, excuse me Jimbo, who said that we aren't also concerned about all these issues?

Personally I homeschool my children and feed them on handwoven lentils. It's a miracle I find time to mumsnet really.

Come on, seriously, don't you think you are being wilfully obtuse here? Caring about one aspect of their life (internet safety) doesn't mean abandoning all the important points you raise above. In fact it's all part of the same picture.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/07/2010 13:43

but dittany they already show porn in PSHE in school - cartoon people having sex. Would showing real people having sex be any worse than e.g. showing "The Silent Scream" in RE?

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 19/07/2010 13:43

Jimbo - I think people on here might worry about those things too. They might even do something about it.

"The real atrocity here is that people put coca cola into their bodies in the first place."

Really, Jimbo? Really?

Is that what you think?

I mean: really?

You do know it's a fizzy drink, don't you. It hasn't had cocaine in it for many years?

So you seriously think that being exposed to stomach-churning porn is less offensive than drinking a can of fizzy pop?

Says more about you than you dreamed.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 19/07/2010 13:45

dittany - Laurie Penny seems to be advocating showing films featuring people having non-exploitative sex to teenagers. If this is produced for schools does it even fit the defintion of pornography?

shitforbrains · 19/07/2010 13:45

hear hear mrsrickman

strandedatsea · 19/07/2010 13:45

Jimbo - was that your experience of school? If so, that is quite sad.

And perhaps is starting to explain some things about you.

If I were you, I would stay on MN. You will find loads of threads that will be able to help you.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 19/07/2010 13:46

I think Jimbo can only be cross about tone thing at a time - he needs to develop a more wideband anger.

Jimbo1531 · 19/07/2010 13:47

"Personally I homeschool my children and feed them on handwoven lentils. It's a miracle I find time to mumsnet really."

I WAS homeschooled, which is why I can string a sentence together coherently and with punctuation. Maybe if you spent a little less time working your braincell(s) on 'witty sarcasm' and a bit more time paying attention to your children, they wouldn't feel the need to advertise sugary drinks on their Facebook profiles.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 19/07/2010 13:49

They don't have facebook profiles.
