Getting really p*****d off now with constant INTERNATIONAL CALLS, anyone else have this problem?

My phone rings constantly with people from India trying to get me to switch bank accounts or phone providers. They dont take no for an answer and I got to swearing point with one caller. (they had tried to ring my number 11 times that day)I run my business from home and use my residential line for calls so it's really annoying.

Complained to BT, but not much they can do ....

anyone else get this?

I just wish you could TPS a business line if you work from home...

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 19:29

lemonice - do you know why that can't be done? just wondering?

No idea, just the rule..and an annoying one...the only people who ring on the home phone are staybrite (we are ex directory as well)...but in the same room I have these daily calls from 3 or 4 companies over and over again (same callers too, not just same company) on the business line...bonkers...

pesha · 16/08/2005 19:37

I realised it was a joke if i actually thought you were sreious my response wouldnt have been quite so restrained, i just dont find it very funny. I did that job cos i had to and for you to say you'd rather go on the game than do that, joking or not, is highly offensive i think.
And by the way im not defending telesales as a practice just the individuals who do it

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 19:39

just visited the tps website to check that my number is registered and it still is?

I assume that it doesn't affect international calls, although they do reccomend contacting the comapnies and asking to be removed from their list. I have tried this (again with onetel Grrrrr) but they still keep calling

if you get a double glazing company, tell them you live in a listed building. I swear if you tell just ONE company that you will never ever get a call from a double glazing company again....

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 19:47

sorry pesha, i didn't mean to offend really i didn't, just letting off steam. You said your comapny doesnt contact people who are tps, but can you understand how it feels when you are constantly harrassed by companies who don't give a s**t about that.

I have had three calls today by different companies and there wil be more tommorow.

I never used to get called like this, don't know what i did to deserve it!

Actually if people say listed we were "approved by national heritage to fit windows on grade 2 listed buildings" Sorry, grade 1 cant be touched though you're safe with that!!

I think ive got that the right way round, its been a while since i did it and ive tried to block most of it out!

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 19:57

we have just had another call!

OP posts:
PrincessPeaHead · 16/08/2005 19:59

I always tell them we are Grade II*, you can't touch those either!

Eeek · 16/08/2005 20:00

We had huge problems with a UK based company and called BT for advice. They said to get company name, then say that you're a member of the TPS that it's illegal to call you under the Telecommunications Act and that you'll report them to the watchdog. They even gave us a form of words in case we wanted to write to the company direct. Worked for us. Mind you - we still get constant empty calls from America which they can't do anything about

"I almost always put my phone number down as 01234 567890"

and I bet some poor sod in Bedford is getting all your phonecalls (01234 is the Bedford code) LOL.

If the phone rings at an inconvienent time - don't answer it! My family and friends know that if I don't answer the phone it's because I'm either out or busy.......they either leave a message or ring back later.

Do you know how many places people can get your details? The electoral role for starters, then places like Credit Brokers, Insurance Brokers, Mortgage Brokers (anyone who is allowed to pass your information on to other parties in order for them to offer you the best deal......also then frequently sell the details on - the only ones we've had in recent months are from a Credit Broker from before Christmas.

Also a lot of them are 'random number generators' - in that they really do just pick random numbers (that's why often they'll not say "oh hello Mrs Bloggs" but just introduce themselves straight away).

Yeah sorry clever clogs dont know why i got so worked up just having a bad day. I hated the job, hated most of the people i worked for, especially the pervy ones!, the only thing i enjoyed was chatting in between calls to the people i worked with. I really do understand how frustrating it is, like i said im not defending the practise of telesales just saying that it is just people doing a job and if you keep getting the calls its not them doing it intentionally they dont remember who they've called before they just dial whatever numbers on the list, taking it out on them wont do any harm to the company only the individual which seems a little unfair. Im all for taking it out on the company, making complaints if they're calling continuosly or whatever but leaving them hanging on the line etc isnt gonna achieve anything.
And yes some are very pushy cos thats how your trained to be thats what gets results and if youre not 'objection handling' you wont last long. Saying that pushy shouldnt mean rude though just persistent.

philippat · 16/08/2005 22:08

tee hee QoQ, and I bet that bedford person was so chuffed to get an easy to remember number....

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 23:46

sorry to hear you've not had a good day Pesha - hope tommorow gets better.

Just been to see war of the worlds and feling a little spooked!

Was any good, didnt know it was scary kind of film? I been on here all night, woulda have watched some tv but kids have hidden remote somewhere, either that or puppys eaten it cos buggered if i can find it anywhere, and have sky so really cant be doing with up and down flipping through hundreds of channels all night when there never anything on anyway! Sorry what a silly thing to rant about!

cleverclogs · 17/08/2005 11:02

Hi pesha, film was brlliant - im a bit of a woos (?sp) when it comes to scary films but it wasn't too bad
Did you find your remote? isn't that bloody annoying?
hope you have a nice day today, i am goin to be more polite to my international caller today

OP posts:
wordsmith · 17/08/2005 11:05

Get an answerphone and leave it on constantly so you can screen calls. ONce you know it's a call you want you can pick up. They will soon stop once they realise no-one answers.

tallulah · 17/08/2005 11:20

pesha, appreciate where you're coming from, but why should someone have to ring a number to get themselves removed from a list that they didn't ask to be put on in the first place?!

We tend to be plagued with calls from banks we have or have had credit cards with, always trying to sell us payment protection. I always say that I used to work in a bank & I know how it works and I'm not interested, but they still ring again a few months later. We're ex-directory and these are the only calls we get but they are still annoying.

pesha · 17/08/2005 11:20

Im a wuss(sp?) too, used to love scary movies as a kid but just cant anymore, even rubbish films scare me! Think its having kids does it, you lose your body your mind and your balls

Well i have anyway

And no still not found remote im too stressed to even try looking cos i know not finding it would have me screaming and throwing things and all sorts today (i have just a tiny touch of pmt!) so ill let their dad look for it this afternoon, he cannot cope without bein able to change channel every 5 minutes!

And good for you, sorry i got a bit stressy about it all yesterday i know how infuriating it is. I think if anyone catches me at the wrong time today i may take my frustrations out on them. Actually thats not a bad idea, stop me from taking it out on kids wouldnt it?! Finally a use for telesales calls!!!

pesha · 17/08/2005 11:25

Can only talk for firms i worked for but if we got no answer it would be put down as call back and noone would know how many times its come up before so would keep being rung. And yeah i know it is unfair that you should have to go out of your way to stop yourself getting calls that you never asked for in the 1st place, im not saying its right im just saying thats how it works. sorry
