Getting really p*****d off now with constant INTERNATIONAL CALLS, anyone else have this problem?

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 13:58

My phone rings constantly with people from India trying to get me to switch bank accounts or phone providers. They dont take no for an answer and I got to swearing point with one caller. (they had tried to ring my number 11 times that day)I run my business from home and use my residential line for calls so it's really annoying.

Complained to BT, but not much they can do ....

anyone else get this?

You know what - we're not registered with TPS, I enter hundreds of online competitions a week, and we very rarely get sales calls (maybe one a week if that)

I've never had 'repeat' calls from the same company either.

lemonice · 16/08/2005 17:25

I think you're lucky QOQ!!!

Hope it keeps up, but if you don't get them then you may find it difficult to see how irritating they are...

QueenOfQuotes · 16/08/2005 17:26

lemonice - I don't think I'm 'lucky' (seems to be the norm within my RL friends) - I think obviously something's going wrong with somewhere with you that seem to be inundated with these calls.

Each time I get a call I tell them I'm not interested and don't wish to recieve anymore calls from them again (politely) and it's not failed yet (been back in the UK for 5yrs now).

QueenOfQuotes · 16/08/2005 17:27

and I still don't think there's any excuse for getting angry at the person at the other end of the phone - they didn't 'find' your number and deliberately decide to call you up to annoy you (and obvsiously plenty of people actually take up the sales offers or they wouldn't bother!)

moondog · 16/08/2005 17:55

Apparently they now have computers that randomly dial numbers. This is why yopu sometimes pick up the phone and there is no answer,or it comes after a few seconds,or as once happened to me,someone very rudley says 'Hang on a sec.'

'Hang on a sec' when they're trying to flog me something I don't even want?????

I was incandescent with rage.

jampots · 16/08/2005 18:39

We get at least 2-3 calls a day usually from cellular network type things. I told Staybright when they used to call if they called again I would contact the Police and say they were harrassing me

pesha · 16/08/2005 18:42

I worked in tele sales for windows companys in the past, its mind numbing work and time goes so slowly it feels like its going backwards. Most of the people i worked with were students or mums. We had targets of the number of people we had to ring and the number of leads we had to get and we got paid min wage plus bonuses only if leads sold. We didnt want to be calling people who werent interested cos its wasting our time aswell as yours but if you just say not interested without giving a reason then we're meant to put it down as a call back in case you are but it was just a bad time for you. And leaving the phone on hold or going along pretending to be interested just to wind us up may seem funny but i wasnt there cos i liked it, i wasnt ringing hundreds of people a day because i enjoyed being verbally abused or enjoyed 'harassing' people in their homes but because i had a mortgage to pay and needed the money, was pg with 1st baby and werent any other jobs round here i could get.
My advice is to say sorry you're really not interested and would like to be taken off their list and they have to either do this or give you a number to call to get yourself removed from the list. Or in uk they do anyway cant comment on international. And if your really mad find out the number for the company manager or something and ring him, harass him, make a complaint, dont take it out on the poor person just trying to earn a living

jampots · 16/08/2005 18:46

pesha - I understand your point but how do you feel when you are called many times a day usually at inconvenient times? There's only so many times one can say, "please dont call back".

In addition, are telesales people not given training in how to handle horrid customers?

pesha · 16/08/2005 18:54

Babyonboard just read your comments again the "silly call targets" are the targets of the "lower level employees", if they're not making enough calls and getting enough leads then they lose their job which does tend to affect them.

philippat · 16/08/2005 18:55

I almost always put my phone number down as 01234 567890 (unless they are actually likely to need to call me of course) rather than my real number. Touch wood, works so far, rarely get junk calls.

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 19:01

Pesha, your post is interesting and its good to get a different perpective on things, HOWEVER!

I have really tried to be reasonable and explain to people why I am not interested in their product/service but it doesn't seem to deter them.

I'm sorry but if I say no, I mean no. I completely agree that its wrong to take it out on the person who's calling but what can you do.

I have asked for company supervisors name and number and was refused it, I have asked to be removed from list and it made no difference. In the case of OneTel, i even sent an email to their complaints department to insist that they stop contacting me, but after 2 weeks the calls started again.

how dare people call me in my own home and start an argument with me????? I just don't get it.

QofQ, I'm delighted that to date you have been unaffected by these calls, but I promise you, that if you received somewhere in the region of 10-15 calls per week, each from companies who refuse to take no for an answer you would feel very differently.

pesha · 16/08/2005 19:06

I know it is annoying i do understand that but i dont really let it wind me up, there are worse things in life! If im really busy or stressed i just hang up. And no i never had any training for that i had training in objection handling ie why arent you interested, is that the front or the back of the house etc and how to book leads and fill out call sheets but nothing on how to deal with someone who threatens to come and burn the whole place down with me in it! Or nothing really on every day nastiness cos your trainings when you 1st start and they dont like to admit then that people might be nasty to you, they're as desperate to get people to do telesales as they are to get people to buy windows!

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 19:09

Actually, i would also like to add that i do occassionally get sales calls from people who are actually quite nice and reasonable and if you say your not interested, will reply "ok, no problem - thankyou for your time etc etc"

I wonder if these are the students and mums that pesha is referring to.

But on the whole, the calls i get are from very pushy individuals, and these are the ones that cause the problems for me.

lemonice · 16/08/2005 19:12

The problem is that it is a lazy and cheap scattergun approach to sales.

I've never met anyone who has made a purchase as the result of receiving a random call...

I really can't see how ringing the same person who always says they are not interested at roughly the same time every day for years on end is a way to sell anything...

I don't pick up the phone book and ring people in the evenings to ask them to buy stuff...

jampots · 16/08/2005 19:13

lemonice - you could ring me 0121 500 077 (SOD OFF)

jampots · 16/08/2005 19:13

sorry forgot the

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 19:14

I agree, lemonice, also if i want new windows, new kitchen, new phone service provider, etc, I'll go looking for it and seek reccomendations, not sit at home and wait for some idiot to ring me and make the suggestion

OP posts:
cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 19:17

i would rather go on the game, then get a job in telesales.......

At least your customers would finish with a smile on their faces

Staybrite (sp?) Windows used to keep ringing my house even when I told them I wasn't interested.

Eventually had the windows done - but, guess what, didn't use Staybrite!

pesha · 16/08/2005 19:19

I really would recommend tps it should stop all uk calls, if we dialled a number that was tps registered we would just get a recorded message telling us this person does not wish to receive unsolicited calls. And if companys do call you when you're tps they are breaking the law and can receive huge fines, I dont know all the ins and outs ive never registered myself but this is what we were told anyway and seemed to work for us, never spoke to anyone who was tps.

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 19:20

we are tps, but it still happens we get uk and international calls

lemonice · 16/08/2005 19:25

I've got nothing against people working in telesales, but I think they should you cross you off the list if you say you are not interested, not ring you again and again and certainly not 30 seconds later to demand an explanation...
