Getting really p*****d off now with constant INTERNATIONAL CALLS, anyone else have this problem?

My phone rings constantly with people from India trying to get me to switch bank accounts or phone providers. They dont take no for an answer and I got to swearing point with one caller. (they had tried to ring my number 11 times that day)I run my business from home and use my residential line for calls so it's really annoying.

Complained to BT, but not much they can do ....

anyone else get this?

chandra thats a possibility but those tick boxes can catch you out, it should be the other way round (ie you should actively give them permission to sell your information on)

Also if you are running a business from that phone and your details have been picked up by a directory that is publicly available eg Yellow pages, Thomson etc then these callers will have got your number from there and they then say that even if you are TPS you contacted them and so they are allowed to get back to you with promotional calls despite the fact that this not true. You can't prove otherwise.

Yes, works like that as well. I have actually stoped joining any mailing list unless I'm seriously interested in their service.

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 14:28

lemonice - whats TPS (being bit thick - not much of a cleverclogs)

We have TPS and anonymous call reject (from BT) and the combination of the two works fairly well, although we still get the occasional International but tend not to answer.

I can't believe it the phone has just rang and it was an International call, which for us always means telesales!

Demented · 16/08/2005 14:29

TPS is the Telephone Preference Service.

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 14:30

thanks demented

Sorry cleverclogs I put a link further down the thread to TPS (telephone preference service)

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 14:36

dont apologise, I wasn't paying attention (all my old school repots will pay testament to that!)

we should have a poll to find out who the worst offenders are, then I'm tempted to contact the companies named and show them our thread

our worst offenders are Space Kitchens and 3 mobile.

Will try "hold on a sec" method next.

lemonice · 16/08/2005 14:46

The other problem of course is having other members of the family with mobile phones, playstations, bikes etc who also shop and fill things in and don't bother about tick boxes!

jampots · 16/08/2005 14:46

WOW - hilarious! Ive just taken a call from an 0207 number (full number to follow) and its Cellular phones and Ive been awarded all inclusive phone plus minutes etc!!!

Ive used the "let me grab a pen..." and stuck the phone unde the duvet so I can carry on typing. hee hee hee

I am soooo enjoying it.

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 14:46

jampots, never heard of space kitchens, butam sure I will do soon! If i ever get a call about home improvements, i just say that our house is rented and our landlord is a miser - that usually works.

I had a call from MBNA once (a bank) wanting to talk to my DH, I must have been really fed up cause I told them he had died, not realising that it was a genuine call in response to a letter he had sent them. I had forgotten we banked with them

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 14:50

my dh arrived home later that day (very much still alive) and said "bye the way, did MBNA call?"

jampots · 16/08/2005 14:51

she;s still under the blanket

cleverclogs · 16/08/2005 14:52

thats brilliant, go back back to the phone now and say "I've found my pen!, then oh no it's ran out, sorry won't be a mo" (back under blanket)

OP posts:
jampots · 16/08/2005 14:57

The number she called from is 0207 170 8860

mummyhill · 16/08/2005 16:02

I registered with TPS too and this has stoped 90% of uk calls. Have started to get bombarded with calls from india/america etc now as well as soon as I hear good morning/afternoon/evening madame I put the phone down as I am getting really fed up. I tried being polite, then I tried being blunt now I don't even let them get to the second sentence.

babyonboard · 16/08/2005 16:08

it's the best! you get to waste their time too..and ruin their silly 'call targets' etc
mwuhahahahahahaa

QueenOfQuotes · 16/08/2005 17:11

"it's the best! you get to waste their time too..and ruin their silly 'call targets' "

hmmm - just hope none of your DH's (or yourself) ever have to work in Telesales. They're doing their job earning money which pays for the same things which our DH's jobs do...

babyonboard · 16/08/2005 17:16

aw come on..no need to get gnarly
if some comapny is prepared to hassle people any time day and night that don't want hteir business then it is very reasonable to cause them a little trouble..and i very much doubt the consequences would be passed down to lower level employees
If someone was poking you in the back on the bus, and kept doing it,and you ask them to stop, and they did it again... and you ask them to stop again, and they do it again, would it not be reasonable to turn around and give them a poke too?

QueenOfQuotes · 16/08/2005 17:20

but the people you're actually calling are just doing their job. That's what they get paid to do, and obviously get bonuses for sales made.

I'm sure most of them would rather do other jobs than telesales, but if it pays the bills.........

It's the companies behind the sales calls you should be angry at - not the people doing their job.

And no - I wouldn't poke someone back on the bus.

lemonice · 16/08/2005 17:21

What I can't understand is they ring every day, I now recognise their voices and everyday I say I'm not interested...so as I am working and therefore trying to earn money I find it very irritating that they can't be trained to know they are undesirable pests...I'm not rude but I am now impatient and sometimes I just rest the phone somewhere in the desperate hope they get the message...

But if you have a home phone it really does benefit you to register with the TPS...

I can tell the difference because home and work lines are in the same room
