Losing anonymity on MN - has it happened to you?

HI, some people may have read my earlier thread about this which is now deleted as are all my earlier posts and comments on other threads. The reason for this is that a friend of my boss at work told her my MN name (she worked it out, I don't know the friend but she's a regular poster on here, a lot of you will know who she is but I'm still not sure about divulging her name) and then sent her an email link to some of my most embarrassing threads. I found out about it on Friday and have been stewing over what to do. I decided to get my posts etc. deleted and maybe take a new name or maybe keep a different name for more sensitive stuff. I'm pretty fed up about it as some of the threads like my quitting smoking chats have been a saviour to me and I now feel I can't post on them as freely as before. But still.

Anyway, wanted to let you know that's why my name comes up as 'message deleted' all over the place. I'm not banned.

Yet!

Hope you're okay, MLL. It seems so unfair that you might have to change your name while the other person gets to keep their anonymity.

Flossam · 13/08/2005 17:46

MY god. Some people really do need to get a life don't they? How vicous and cruel. I think she should be outed, I don't want to 'chat' with this person, hopefully then they can be banned.

Am I the only one who is still fretting about what Fairymum said at 4:15? My dh works with women and knows about my Mumsnet obsession (and my name). Surely that could apply to hundreds of us. Whose dh is it you know Fairymum? At least say where you live to give me some relief (or further my anxiety!)

Blimey, typical me to go off and miss my own drama! I was on the other thread for so long and started this one after the other one was deleted, by which point I needed to get out of the flat.

Hey, listen, just to put things straight as they've got a bit excited. I'm sure this person isn't a nutty psychopath or anything like that. What happened is that she's a friend of my boss who visited her last weekend. The friend is a regular poster on MN and my boss mentioned that I love it too. Friend asked for some details about me and said immediately that she knew who I was and gave boss my MN name. Fair enough. I guess. But then she posted my boss the links to the threads which I think was on one hand unnecessary because my boss could've searched for herself at that point if she'd wanted to, and on the other too 'interested' in divulging info about me to someone who it would be embarrassing (clearly) for me to have personal info given to. It's the latter that bugs me. Ok, she might have let slip my name. But the thread links? It doesn't really make sense.

Anyway, because this is a friend of my boss and although I could tell you some general info about her in RL from things my boss has said to me (harmlessly I stress!), I'd rather not. It puts me in a very difficult position. I think I've sussed out her MN name though she's a bit 'slippery'. I've done this detective stuff solo and may be way off the mark so am not about to 'out' anyone. BUT, as I said in the other thread before it got deleted, I WILL do something to let her know.

Initially I was quietly furious about it and actually a bit upset, certainly deeply embarrassed to have that kind of info made available to someone I work with! Now I've decided to keep my name for my general threads and find a different one for more personal stuff which is annoying. But I'll live with it!

Anyhow, thanks SO much for all your interest and support!

essbee - i know it wasnt you but thought we were just going to list Watfordians (although you arent apparently)

mummylonglegs · 13/08/2005 19:11

I've got to get dd in the bath, but just wanted to add that I'm not ashamed of any of my past posts, it's just that it's like someone seeing you naked, you know? If I wanted what I wrote to be read by people I knew I'd have written them differently, or maybe not at all. They were written in the thought that I was safely 'anonymous' unless I chose not to be. Does that make sense?

Yes of course, it makes perfect sense, mll. There are posts of mine that I was happy to put here in MN anonymity but wouldn't necessarily want my RL friends and acquaintances to read.

Glad you will keep your name some of the time
