Computer extremely slow -advice would be lovely

Can anybody advise me how to speed it up?
Its very slow at opening programs, internet searches are variable. It's not an internet connection problem, it's slow even if I ask it to open my USB.

Could it be a virus?

I would suggest doing a full system scan and checking your internet security has found anything (if you have it).
