when did you put your child into a forward facing seat?

Thinking about this for the future. DS still just about fits in his rear-facing seat, although he is quite long and his legs stick out the end!
anyway, he is 6 months old and weighs over 19lb

i have seen conflicting advice everywhere
mothercare says that they can go forward facing from 9kg
somewhere else said they should be 9kg AND 9 months
AA says 20lb and 1 year

there is no way he will still fit in his seat at 1 year!
JUst to stress, i know i need to keep him rear-facing as long as possible...
but what is the right advice? wait til a year? wait til 9 months? or is he ok now because of his weight?

mothercare don't stock them
i am going to see if any of our local nursery shops have them.
don't know what colour yet though. i like the mauvey one but might be a bit girly for ds!
