I was walking along the beach which is next to a golf course where I live (Caister, Norfolk) with the dog, my sister and ds. Ds decides to throw his frisbee into the golf course (which has wire netting around it) and my sister and I both managed to reach through the netting, falling into a heap in the process. Anyway, there was a group of men a little up a hill on the golf course who looked over a couple of times, probably wondering what we were doing when a couple of minutes later, ds decides to throw the frisbee over again and it was completely out of reach.

Just then, one of the men came towards us, picked up the frisbee and handed it back to me and when I looked up at him, I realised it was Hugh Grant!! I said thanks and he said 'its a pleasure' and walked back to his golf.

Although I was positive it was him, I thought I could be hallucinating and later on, nobody believed me when I told them. However, on Monday morning there was a big thing on the local radio about his visit to Caister and its been in all the local papers that he came here!! So unbelievably Hugh Grant returned my frisbee!! I'm going to frame it.........

Didn't talk to him but saw Tony Hadley walking down the seafront on Monday (he was doing a concert locally that night). He did look at me though as I was in my car in a traffic jam with the window wound right down and staring at him. If I hadn't had dd with me I might have shouted "True" or "Gold" at him just to annoy him.

tinyfeet · 09/07/2003 21:04

Great story, Susanb! What fun! Did he look as good in person as he does on the screen?

tinyfeet · 09/07/2003 21:08

I ran into Sean Connery and his wife at Heathrow once, and he looked fabulous! I've seen a lot of celebrities in person before and I've often been a bit disappointed by how short they are in person. But Sean Connery was really quite tall and gorgeous.

pie · 09/07/2003 21:08

susan did he look old in real life?

I saw Tony Hadley once, he had a Gold Mercedes and I chuckled....

susanb · 09/07/2003 21:15

Hi Pie

He was wearing quite large glasses and a cap (which is probably why I didn't recognise him until he was quite close). He was about the same height I would imagine him to be, and quite skinny, but yes he did look a bit wrinkly.

I kicked myself because I looked an absolute state; had a rotten cold and bright red nose and I'd left my uplifting bra at home!!

and then you feel stupid for not knowing what (smart thing) to say... and kick yourself afterwards... don't you ???
My friend in Islington saw this gorgeous man walking past with a woman and baby.... she only realised once she had past him that it was Pierce Brosnan... she said he was blxxdy good looking in person!

jasper · 09/07/2003 23:32

My sister bumped into a woman in Laura Ashley in Brighton , and when she turned to say sorry, saw it was Twiggy. Aparently she was completely stunning. Twiggy, that is, though my sis is gorgeous too

Person next to me in deli queue on Fulham Road started chatting once, looked very familiar so chatted back, but couldn't place them until she left and my friend commented how cool I was just chatting to Kylie Minogue. She couldn't get a word out. When I was a nurse, the consultants used to get me to see their private patients because 9/10 I wouldn't recognise them,a m useless like that!

oliveoil · 10/07/2003 09:16

Saw David Beckham and Posh once! I was sheltering from rain in a doorway and saw him walking up the street, thought I knew him and said hello!!!!! He looked at me like I was a mad stalker and I got a filthy look from the missus as well. They were collecting a very tacky 5ft vase from a shop and about 15 staff were assisting, v amusing.

mieow · 10/07/2003 11:26

Saw Pat from eastenders once in St Albans, she was coming out a lift as me and my sister were going in, reconised her but couldn't place her, thinking she was a friend of the family, smiled and said hi, she said hello back, it wasn't till we were in the lift, sis and I realised who she was

mieow · 10/07/2003 11:36

And one day I was working on the checkouts at safeway, I served this bloke, treated him like all the other customers, gave him his change and said bye, the next customer said "you do know who that was, don't you??" he was an actor from Drop the Dead donkey!!! Never seen it so 'No' I didn't know!!!!!! And I served one of the lads from the old boy band 'Bad Boys Inc'

Meid · 10/07/2003 11:51

Some blonde woman in a convertible stopped to let me cross a zebra cross a few months ago. She looked really annoyed that I had stepped out and made her stop so I through her a dirty look and walked as slowly as possible! When I glanced back I realised it was Emma Bunton.

Meid · 10/07/2003 11:52

I really must preview. I meant crossING and THREW!

Gem13 · 10/07/2003 12:47

Crikey SusanB - did he look as lovely as he did in Bridget Jones (when he was in the boat)? Didn't understand what everyone raved about until I saw that film...

slug · 10/07/2003 15:20

BF was drunk in Soho a couple of weeks ago, was crossing the road and realised that the people next to him were Neil and Christine Hamilton. Said friend leaned over and said in his best public school accent "Neil Hamilton...you're a c**t" Then wheeled off drunken into the night.

Boe · 10/07/2003 15:45

Went to a wedding once where the guy who played george was from Ldn's Burning - got rather drunk (that was when I could drink as well) and spent an hour asking him to come for a kebab with me - went on so long that I actually ended up begging him and he told me (quite loudly) that he did not like kebas so would I kindly f off!! Felt a complete prat and couldn't even sneak out as had to wait for mini bus and then had to spend an hour with everyone doing impressions of me.

WideWebWitch · 10/07/2003 17:27

slug, that's priceless!

SueW · 10/07/2003 20:30

Neil and Christine Hamilton are my former neighbours.

janh · 10/07/2003 20:42

Well don't stop there, SueW!!!! And....?????

susanb · 10/07/2003 20:55

Gem13

He did look rather nice; although I am a bit biased as I think he's gorgeous anyway! Although the glasses were quite large.....

Anyway, I am now famous as a friend of a friend contacted the local rag and they phoned me for my 'story'!! I've just got the paper and my sister and I are famous!

Only claim to close encounters with well known bods is that I managed to shoulder charge Jeremy Paxman - I was coming out of the office and he was just walking down the street (not uncommon in Edinburgh during the Festival) and he walked straight into my path and we clashed shoulders - I'd muttered a disgruntled "sorry" (I get quickly fed up of the packed pavements during the festival when I'm trying to get around the city on work) and bustled on before I realised...

SueW · 10/07/2003 22:12

janh, they were perfectly good neighbours although it was a little daunting to run the gauntlet of the press when leaving for work sometimes!
