Aah,lilibet, don't mind me. I'm just in a silly mood. I'm sure they are beeeyoootiful (and I speak as someone with a complete thing about aesthetically pleasing storage systems.

I may be the only woman in Britain whose utility room shelves are lined with precious little hand woven baskets containing all my potions and appliances.

Friends??????

nailpolish · 03/08/2005 18:20

MD did you weave them yourself?

lilibet · 03/08/2005 18:20

laughing!!

We bought someone one for a pressie recently!

puff · 03/08/2005 18:22

moondog, I've got 3 of those kind of boxes - bought on a whim in Selfridges - one for wedding stuff, the other 2 for mementos to do with 2 ds's - have I filled them? No . They are very stylishly taking up a whole shelf of essential cupboard space!

moondog · 03/08/2005 18:25

lol at you lot.
Why yes I did actually np...
Have I not yet mentioned my artisan's studio which houses my loom, spinning wheel and kiln.....??????

csa · 03/08/2005 22:20

lol moondog. question is does the outer box have to be even nicer than the inner one cos of course you need it to look good on presentation to the happy couple?

Hulababy · 03/08/2005 22:26

Out of your list my fave is Veuve Clicquot. Well TBH I do like most fizz but the Veuve Cliuquot is particualrly lovely.

Bollinger - nice, but not as nice as VC IMO. Not sure I like it more than Moet either.

Moet & Chandon - well known name, good taste.

I have had the other two too but can't rememmber much about them.

Another nice one, and not quite as commonly bought is Tattinger.

bubblerock · 03/08/2005 22:30

We had the exact same problem - we bought our old neighbours a really nice wooden salad bowl set from Debenhams - large bowl, 4 small bowls & servers in a nice box. Didn't cost too much and they were out in the garden a few weeks later with friends using it

BigGayDad · 03/08/2005 22:30

A pooper scooper

stitch · 03/08/2005 22:33

i would buy s coupl of testbooks for kids in africa via the oxfam website, and give them the card confirming it.

stitch · 03/08/2005 22:34

gosh, 25 quid, yo ucould buy a whole class testbooks for that.
i know a camel would cost 100ish. there was a linkon a thread here a while ago.

Tasa · 03/08/2005 22:36

okay may sound ridiculous especially at this time of year but one of the best presents I ever got was three beautifully wrapped and really lovely Christmas tree decorations and every hyear when I get the tree out and the decorations out I remember the person who bought me them and tell the children about them and really get a lot of pleasure form them every year...just an idea

CountessDracula · 03/08/2005 22:59

I would get

some fab cheese from Neal's Yard
a really good bottle of wine
some theatre tickets (look on lastminute.com you can get good ones for £10 each)

BTW I actually DON'T like roses Aloha! My father is obsessed with them and I spent half my childhood covered in scratches having fallen off my bike and landed in/on roses!

CountessDracula · 03/08/2005 23:00

oh or a nice orchid

moondog · 03/08/2005 23:30

Exactly csa!
Tasa, one year I gave all the people I know fabulous handmade Christmas decorations that I had bought for a song in Moscow (where we lived at the time). A lot of them still tell me how much they enjoy them every year.

(Another year it was vodka which also went down very well.)

swedishmum · 04/08/2005 01:35

My vote's for Cristal - expensive though.

Something yummy from Harvey Nicks? I get v expensive chocolates or something else consumable, bearing in mind I don't really want anyone else to make design choices for me unless they know me really well.

TwinSetAndPearls · 04/08/2005 01:36

Chocolates from fortnum and masons would be my vote.

northerndad · 04/08/2005 01:53

now you might think I'm daft, but you can buy plots of land on the moon, or even Mars for that matter. Usually between 15 and 20 quid an acre. you even get a map showing you where it is. Theres a few different web sites, just type in land on moon for sale or something like that. Ok I am daft.

aloha · 04/08/2005 08:12

For a wedding I think it's nice to have something lasting and fairly trad - that's why I like cookware. The Nigella Lawson mini biscuit cutters are very nice and excellent if they are expecting a baby too. I like looking at the things we got for our wedding for the kitchen.

What about His and Hers matching T-shirts that say "We have everything" on them!

MrsGordonRamsay · 04/08/2005 08:19

Tooth

nailpolish · 04/08/2005 08:22

dont give them anything too posh - like really expensive champagne. if you buy them pressies in the future you will have to keep up the standard!

go on, just buy them chocolates. or Harvey Nichols gingerbread men. yummmmmmmmmmm

oliveoil · 04/08/2005 09:14

I think aloha is on commission with Nigella....

hatstand · 04/08/2005 09:20

sorry northerndad but you are indeed mad. not to mention a sucker for a money-making scam
