I just went to put some washing on and found a very stinky t shirt in the machine and a very stinky machine. They smell of white spirit. After making some enquiries it turns out someone got paint on their shirt and used loads of white spirit in an attemopt to get it off. Apparfently before putting in machine they rinsed most of it off but by the smell I find that very hard to believe. It is a very new and pretty expensive machine? How do I get the smell out?

Oh dear. Well first of all REMOVE THE SHIRT! leave the door open to air it a bit. Biological washing powder, boil wash, nothing in it. If that doesn't work, swab inside of drum with vinegar (the smell will go when it dries) then rerun it empty.

Incidentally that someone is an idiot. You don't leave a flammable liquid on a cloth inside an electric device and just think 'ah that'll be fine'

Clean out the filter then try the longest wash cycle with an empty machine with 1lt of white vinegar in the water then leave the machine open (door, soap drawer, filter cover) to dry.

Fingers crossed smell gone.

thats one of the things worrying me whomovedmychocolate. i am very overcautious when it comes to electric stuff and am very scared of fire so didn't knwo if i was being silly or not, but will it be ok to do a hot wash as there has been flammable liquid in?

Fine to do a hot wash, machine will be full of water after all. Think I would bin the T shirt though!!

Yes it'll be fine. Don't stress about that - I was putting linseed oil onto some garden furniture and the cloth I was using caught fire - twas bloody scary. Put it down for a couple of minutes while I drank my tea and poof up it went
