Does this weather make you want to emigrate?

Dh is sooo fed up, not just with the weather but with rip-off GB in general...has anyone else felt the same and looked into emigrating? Where in the world is most like England culturally, but with better weather? Don't mind snow in winter, so long as year-round weather isn't grey and rainy! Canada? Australia? New Zealand? Somewhere in Europe? Anyone?

drop me an email if you do visit and I'll show you round

Eugenius · 31/07/2005 10:11

No, because the alternative his energy sapping days and too hot to sleep nights

anyway its a nice day where I am

suzywong · 31/07/2005 10:12

or air-conditioning

Eugenius · 31/07/2005 10:57

Aah yes sw but airconditioning doesn't work outside during the day, so you're driven inside

Anyway the bottom line for me is, I wouldn't emigrate because of the weather

suzywong · 31/07/2005 11:33

does it not?

Caribbeanqueen · 31/07/2005 11:38

I definitely would. This weather is so depressing.

smellymelly · 31/07/2005 12:40

Yeah - we are moving to France in 2.5 weeks!

Not just the weather, thankfully, as it is pretty wet there too at the moment, I think...

redshoes · 31/07/2005 12:41

Starrynight, yes...watching your other thread with interest too! Suzywong where exactly are you?

OP posts:
smellymelly · 31/07/2005 12:42

Silly me, they have had thunderstorms there where we are going, but most of France is in their worst drought for 50 years or so.

redshoes · 31/07/2005 12:42

OOh Smellymelly - how exciting! Whereabouts? Guess not the South if it's raining...

OP posts:
redshoes · 31/07/2005 12:44

Starrynight that's 'yes' to same wavelength but 'no' to perfect place...

I grew up on east coast of canada, weather similar to UK, except for winter. In fact when I lived in UK, I thought it was less wet and definately not as cold. I loved the fact you could get out and about all year.

You say you like snow but you have no idea what you are getting into, snow for 6 months of the year, can't go anywhere as roads impassable and you have to shovel out your front door to get the door open, and cold, oh so very cold. About a month of winter is fun, but the other 5 months.... We have an expression here called " cabin fever" When the settlers first came to canada, some literally went mad from being cooped up in their cabins all winter. So about Feb. Canadians collectively get cabin fever! We do cope, we take up skiing, skating, and other winter sports to pass the time (or fly south to warmer climates during winter).

eidsvold · 02/08/2005 02:32

yesterday - m,id winter - we took dd1 to the zoo - lovely sunny day and 24 degrees!!! today - terrible weather - oversact but still 20 and light grey skies.....

Linnet · 04/08/2005 01:04

Dh and I would love to emigrate to Canada but we don't qualify on their points system. Australia, NZ and USA are also out, so we're stuck here, the weather isn't too bad though. The changeability makes it interesting, as someone else said further down the thread it would be boring if was the same day in day out.

scully · 10/08/2005 10:04

Just saw this thread, bit slow off the mark......
We're returning to Brisbane next year after 11 yrs away, mostly spent here, but sometime in the US and Canada as well. With a South African dh, I would have to say the outdoor lifestyle is a big factor in our decision to leave here, as dd gets older. We would like her to have the same childhood we had, outdoors with big backyards and a living with a smaller population. Don't think either of us will cope with our first summer out there, but we'll get used to it! All shopping centres, public transport, work and cars are air conditioned, and there's always a pool or the beach!
I think spiders will cause us some stress as well, but will just have to get paranoid again and check shoes and washing and outdoor furniture!

redshoes · 10/08/2005 20:37

Oooh Christie1 I definitely don't want 6 months of snow? Whereabouts in East Canada are you? I think I'd really like a mediterranean climate, but near some mountains so we could do the snow stuff too. Any ideas? Most of Europe qualifies, but must be English-speaking.

God,I'm wishing I was back in mild kind green Britain, drizzle and all. Here in Eastern Turkey it's bloody boiling (38C in day)ground baked brown, but come Winter,it is a metre of snow, trapped in the house sort of thing.

At least the sky is blue every day,Winter or Summer.

christie1 · 12/08/2005 02:07

I Lived in halifax nova scotia, right on the water across the pond from the uk. We moved to Ottawa in central canada in september so I miss the water. Canada is really beautiful but unless you are a big skier, I recommend people visit spring, summer, but my favorite is the fall, wtih the leaves changing colour and the weather crisp but not too cold. When I lived in the UK (london) I couldn't believe you could get out and walk about all year long and I didn't really find it cold.

SecondhandRose · 12/08/2005 07:28
