Does this weather make you want to emigrate?

Dh is sooo fed up, not just with the weather but with rip-off GB in general...has anyone else felt the same and looked into emigrating? Where in the world is most like England culturally, but with better weather? Don't mind snow in winter, so long as year-round weather isn't grey and rainy! Canada? Australia? New Zealand? Somewhere in Europe? Anyone?

eidsvold - what about those whacking big spiders you get? Hunter spiders, is it?

Someone I know who emigrated this year and came back this year saw them in the garden.

WestCountryLass · 28/07/2005 19:31

I like the weather here, I like the seasons and how green it is. I wouldn't want to emigrate but my Mum lives in Spain, I have family in South Africa and used to have family in Germany so i've gone for extended holidays abroad and I always want to come back.

starrynight · 28/07/2005 19:32

Maybe I could hack it if I could have extended holidays in the sun At the moment I look out at clouds and rain with no prospect of any kind of holiday in the next few years and just feel...well, depressed.

eidsvold · 29/07/2005 00:32

in Brisbane - huntsman spiders are more prevalent in Sydney than here in BRisbane. Again - woke up - winters day - beautiful sunshine and 24 degrees....

handlemecarefully · 29/07/2005 00:34

I think we've had a good summer in general - but I am not overly keen on British weather, and loathe and detest the dark, dank, wet days that occur October - April/ May.

Sydney weather would suit me - but I like everything else about this country so will be staying put.

handlemecarefully · 29/07/2005 00:36

Hi Iota,

You've ventured back then!

Chandra · 29/07/2005 00:37

Expat, you should have lived in the same place I did... I remember my first months in ENgland looking to the rain, the black clouds, and the cold thinking it was beautiful! HAving said that, after a few months I started desesperately missing the burning sunlight back home (though, I still avoid the summers as I can't stand anymore the average 40-45 degrees regulat during summer...)

redshoes · 29/07/2005 07:06

So where is most like here, but without the dark days we get for most of the year? I don't want burning sun all year, just daylight!

in answer to the original question: Yes, so I did!

starrynight · 29/07/2005 10:22

Where did you emigrate to Suzy?

After over three years, I still love the grey skies and rain, Chandra. Denver had more sunny days a year than San Diego, and it got old fast. Especially as it was pretty arid, but still hot - with weeks of 100+ degree temps, so it felt like an oven. Dried your skin and hair to parchment. So sunny it was downright depressing. Everything brown and dusty.

And Houston - uggh! The stench of any place that boasts 100% humidity for much of the year. 2.5 inch roaches with wings, rats, lizards, mosquitos, spiders, snakes, etc. Dengue fever, West Nile virus, St. Louis encephalitis, and even cases of malaria. Eternal summer. Wash all your clothes immediately after taking them off b/c you're drenched in sweat just walking to your car. An air-conditioned nightmare. No, thanks!

Wouldn't trade this for the world.

starrynight · 29/07/2005 10:34

I lived in the Caribbean for a couple of years and had year round temp of about 30 degrees which was good - sunny every day (rainy season consisted of a 10 min shower then instant sun) and I lived below the hurricane belt so they haven't been hit there for something like 30 or 40 yrs.

Weather and beaches perfect but infrastructure absolutely crud. Expat - I would swap this in a heartbeat if I could a)find where we wanted to live and b)get in

starrynight · 29/07/2005 10:37

BTW - I will be giving Houston a wide birth thanks for the tip!

starrynight · 29/07/2005 10:38

Sorry: Berth not Birth obviously

expatinscotland · 29/07/2005 10:42

Went through three hurricanes. Oh they were BAD. Knocked out all the power for days and the water as well. Humidity went through the roof as well as the temps. Flooding. And you didn't dare go into the water b/c it was full of swarms of fire ants - yes, they swim! - schools of water mocassins (poisonous snakes) and spiders. Mosquito population skyrocketed as well. Awful, just bloody awful.

Houston is one of the cheapest places to live, however. The wages are very high compared to the cost of living. My sister is having a massive five bed, three car garage house built just now in the one of the best areas of town for about £200,000.

redshoes · 30/07/2005 20:47

I lived on the Caribbean coast of Mexico for 6 months and yes, I hated the humidity - my clothes rotted. I'm thinking more of pleasant sunny days with a light breeze, and beautiful evenings to walk in.

Redshoes - I see we are on the same wavelength here So, have you found the magical 'place' yet?

suzywong · 31/07/2005 09:09

reshoes, that sounds like the Fremantle Doctor, the sea breeze that blows in the afternoons here in the south of WA

SenoraPostrophe · 31/07/2005 09:12

it's too hot for me here and it's cold for the time of year. Only had to have the fan on 1 last night.

SenoraPostrophe · 31/07/2005 09:13

expat - that's very much like it is here in summer.

I'm coming to the UK next week though so I'm hoping for some rain.

starrynight · 31/07/2005 09:30

Senora - I take it you are in Spain? We went for a month to go around Southern Spain two years ago (jul/Aug) and it was hell! It was around 40 degrees every day - we were stuck inside sweltering til about 7pm every night. I couldn't cope with it at all! - and the poor kids were even worse..it was definately too hot for us.

SenoraPostrophe · 31/07/2005 09:34

yes, I'm in Spain - Granada.

Roll on September - it's really nice then, for about 5 minutes before winter sets in. Don't mind the winter though.

starrynight · 31/07/2005 09:39

I thought Granada was lovely - one of the nicest places we visited. I would like to go back 'sans' children and at a more manageable time of year.

SenoraPostrophe · 31/07/2005 10:10

It is nice. September and April are the best months because it's still warm enough to enjoy the bars outside in the evenings, but not too hot. October to March are good too if you don't mind a bit of cold weather - it is usually sunny and cold though which i really like.
