OP posts:
samoa · 19/04/2010 09:22

oops sorry! nipple thrush

samoa · 19/04/2010 09:25

Bucharest, won't the doctor give me meds for nipple thrush?

porcamiseria · 19/04/2010 09:37

giveit

I agree with Bucharest. I tend to not say much on relationship issues as just dont want to ill advise! But I agree that this is not a cultural thing. Every nation has good people, and bad. What you decsribe is seriously dysfunctional, and hope you find a solution that works for you and DS x

samoa, hope the nips get better, god bloody BF is such hard work.............

Bucharest · 19/04/2010 09:58

Samoa- I've never had thrush there, but I'm sure they can give you something? Maybe ask on the breastfeeding threads here before you go to the doctor?

BananaGio · 19/04/2010 10:08

Giveit-another one who agrees with Buch (she is very wise ). What you have described seems much more than cultural differences.
Samoa-another happy household here! Forza Roma!!Good luck with the thrush.

Rosa · 19/04/2010 12:28

Franca when was/ is he due to fly back? - I would say try to change and get on a Rome flght more chance of at least touching down further south.
Samoa - Do you have a consultorio they are usually great for BF advice and a chance to meet other mums? Hope it clears up.

samoa · 19/04/2010 12:57

Hi Rosa, i went to the consultorio this morning but the lady for the bf advice was not there. Am going to try again tomorrow morning. Just want to get this bf thing sorted out cause its really tiring me out. But at least the sun is shining and we won last night (sorry any Lazio fans)!

Rosa · 19/04/2010 13:18

If she is not there again ask if there is a phone number of someone you could call. It could be something simple like the latch on or similar. I found they were the best source of advice in Italy to be honest !!

Sputnik · 19/04/2010 14:41

Samoa I had nipple thrush, I sympathise it is bloody agony. The doctor I saw was absolutely useless and didn't even realise you get it there, I had mastitis too (the thrush can cause repeated blocked ducts and mastitis) so she treated that and said wait and see for the thrush. Meanwhile I sorted out the thrush myself by doing an anti candida diet, I was sceptical but it worked brilliantly. Basically you cut out all sugars, including fruit and refined carbs for 5 days. Try and keep the carbs in general low and and aviod sugar for a further couple of weeks.

There are meds for thrush and they recommend treating the baby too as they usually have it in the mouth. I would expect the consultorio would be far more clued up that the GP I saw.

If you are anywhere near the south of Rome btw I would be happy to meet up some time. Anywhere else is problematic what with trafic etc. How are things with the MIL?

samoa · 19/04/2010 16:17

I just came back from the consultorio and have to say that I am not convinced by their explanation. She says that I don't have any infection, that my boobs are too heavy and that is why I am in so much pain, and she has given me yet another cream to put on my nipples. I am not satisfied and find it hard to believe that heavy boobs would wake me up during the night with pain. I have always had big massive boobs and have never had pain like this.

I might go and see my doctor or call la leche here in Rome.

Sputnik: luckily enough my dh sister (who lives abroad) has come back to Rome for a holiday with her kids. So my MIL is spending a lot of tie with her other gc, which suits me very well. I wish my SIL would never leave beccause she loves leaving her kids with her mother and this would give me so much ore breathing space! BTW I live in Monteverde

Francagoestohollywood · 19/04/2010 16:38

Hi,
Samoa, I hope you get the thrush sorted (good idea ringing la leche league, but I agree with rosa that consultori are usually very good for any breastfeeding issue).

Rosa, dh should fly back on friday.

It's bizarre, as I bought some stuff from amazon.co.uk on wednesday night. This morning I wondered when it'd be delivered, and it arrived at midday !

Is it a shooting pain after you feed? I used to get pain up to a couple of hours after feeding.
There's a good leaflet on thrush here

SuiGeneris · 19/04/2010 18:36

Hi everyone! Apologies for the long absence, have been completely caught up with babySG, family visits, etc.

Have not yet caught up with the thread, but Samoa, do insist until you have your thrush properly treated. I had it about 2 months ago (also bf) and it was absolute agony, so lots of sympathy. I was told (and it makes sense) that one needs to treat the thrush and deal with what caused it, to avoid it returning again. The treatment takes a while and there are various strains that are resistant to one of the topical treatments (Nyastin), so if what you have been given is not working, go back and ask again. I did, bringing with me the leaflet Sput has linked to, and it helped enormously. In my case, we started off with Nyastin for the baby and Daktacort cream for me, then we moved to Daktacort oral gel for the baby and Canesten for me and also added oral fluconazole. It took about 10-14 days to get better, and in the meantime the pain was so excruciating I had to express and feed the baby by bottle, as pumping was much more tolerable than bfing, and it allowed the nipples to heal.
I am told that in my case the cause of thrush was nipple trauma due to poor latch plus smearing the nipples in milk and immediately covering them with lanolin cream and putting the bra back on (thereby creating a sweet, dark warm and moist environment, in which thrush thrives). It was made worse by the trainee GP's advice to wash the nipples with water before each feed. Got better when the experienced GP I saw next said it was only necessary to wipe off, gently, any cream that was still visible before the feed. Also, for me dropping the lanolin ointment in favour of hydrogenated sunflower oil worked wonders.

On another subject- do you think that being stuck in the UK while trying to go to Italy to visit family counts as "stranded"? Technically not, I know, but I feel like it. BabySG and I were due to go to Italy on Sat to introduce him to the family, but have been unable to leave. Am currently on hold with the BA call centre to see whether we can get on an earlier flight, otherwise it will be next Sat, a full week late...

Franca: so much for no airmail! Glad you got your stuff and hope the presents of clothes I have sent to two new babies this morning make it there before they grow out of them!

BabySG is screaming, so must be off. Hope to catch up soon!

Francagoestohollywood · 19/04/2010 20:51

Hello SG,
of course you are stranded! I hope you manage to travel asap to see your family.

w amazon!

Glad you finally got the bf sorted out SG, and hope you manage to travel soon.

samoa · 20/04/2010 08:37

Goodmorning all!

another beautiful morning in Rome, lets hope it doesn't piss down this afternoon like yesterday. Got caught in the rain yesterday with my dd and was told by a total stranger that 'non e prudente' to go out in the rain with a baby. I just looked at her and replied in English 'who asked you anyway?'. Not very nice, but my nipples were killing me!

Thanks Sputnik for the leaflet on thrush. I will update you once we get this mystery resolved!

Had a great night sleep. Dd fell asleep at 17:30-22:15 and then 23:30-'5:00. First time like that and maybe the last?

ok got to go and try to get the washing on...

Francagoestohollywood · 20/04/2010 12:35

Yes, it's another lovely day here too, I hope it will last.

Samoa, wow, 5.5 hrs in a row is excellent for such a tiny baby!

OP posts:
Rosa · 20/04/2010 12:40

Hi SG - sorry about you being unable to fly it is getting rather serious this thing and I feel so sorry for those stranded.
Samoa taking the baby out in the rain why you naughty person. MInirosa was in the pram from a few weeks out in all weathers it was that or dd1 not going to nursery- She always looked so warm and snuggly !
Franca well done at your Amazon my M&S order hasn't left the UK yet or so it says.
I was going to order some sandals for GP to bringover for dd in 2 weeks I am no unsure to do so or not - I suppose she can just take them back if they don't make it over.

Francagoestohollywood · 20/04/2010 12:56

Yes, it is getting really serious.
I so hope your parents manage to get here Rosa!

mmmm now you've just made me curious

OP posts:
Francagoestohollywood · 20/04/2010 13:01

I'm loving these sandals for dd, but I think she'd be a 13 and it's out of stock. Damn!

OP posts:
busynotbored · 20/04/2010 13:20

There's beautiful sunshine here but a bloody cold wind. Most of the girls were dressed this morning in their summer uniform dresses and DD said "mummy, I'm so glad u didn't put me in my summer dress, its freezing !". Poor kids.
My friend is cabin crew for united and has been blocked here since last week, she was supposed to be flying again tomorrow but they've said its unlikely ! She might be coming to see us later which will be lovely as haven't seen here since we left Sicily in Nov 08 !!, she divides here time between London, America and Sicily, what a life !
xxx

Sputnik · 20/04/2010 13:57

Ha Samoa you should move out to EUR, it didn't rain at all here yesterday!
Inspired by the weather I have been putting winter clothes away all morning.

Francagoestohollywood · 20/04/2010 14:02

Oh how efficient sput! I've done a bit of "change of season" in our wardrobe, but not fully. I don't trust the weather

OP posts:
Francagoestohollywood · 20/04/2010 14:04

Bnb, wow I'm impressed by your friend's various locations. Has she got a place in each country?

OP posts:
Rosa · 20/04/2010 14:06

Whilst you are putting away winter clothes if you find dd1 old sun hats please send them over as I have come to the conclusion they have gone AWOL. Minirosa blonde with pale blue eyes needs protection and I hate parasols with a passion - I get them trapped in doors etc. grrrrr
