That's because I'm a silly smoker (occasionally) and a sunbather too Gio .

But you should join me on these threads. I'm sure you'd be incredibly eloquent!

Oh. Today I witnessed 2 minutes of the typical Italian lame parenting style. It irritated me so much that I had to bite my tongue and not butt in.
How to raise uncivilized citizens and NOT take responsibility...
Actually it was really a small thing

i know i should join in but I know when I get sucked in it takes up too much time I dont have. Plus there are too many scary characters out there . Other thread that left me a bit was the anti/pro God one the other day. Couldn't believe how rude people were being about peoples beliefs on both sides. Which is why I will remain predominantly a lurker- hate confrontation...
What did you witness Franca. I was getting very pissy on the bus the other day- loads of teenagers grabbed the seats immediately, not one offered seat to ds who then was clutching the pole, swaying all over the place due to the slow, measured and cautious approach of the Roman bus driver . They had a few adults with them who remained silent. Again, loving confrontation as I do I did a lot of muttering darkly and addressed nothing.

Francagoestohollywood · 29/06/2010 20:37

Oh I haven't lurked on the God thread, I have to say. Yes, there are lots of scary people on here

Oh it was something minor, but so "Italian" iyswim.

I went to pick ds up from summer city camp. While waiting for the children to come out, parents crowded the steps that lead to the entrance.
The coordinator of the camp came out and asked parents to leave the steps, as it'd create confusion once the children started to exit (of course!!!)

But 2 little girls of about 4 kept jumping on the steps. So that's what their mother told them: "Eh, non scendete, eh? adesso la signora (meaning the coordinator) viene e vi sculaccia (wtf?)." La signora e' andata a prendere il battipanni ..." ! I was shocked.

I mean, apart from threatening physical discipline that I don't agree of, why did she place the responsibility of dealing with her own children on the coordinator?

I thought a "Girls, you can't play on the steps while the children are coming out" would have been enough!

you would think so! How ridiculous!
If I get one more bastard mosquito bite am going to cry!

Francagoestohollywood · 29/06/2010 20:47

Yes, mosquitos are being annoying I agree.

Sorry for the rant, btw!

OP posts:
BananaGio · 29/06/2010 21:02

that wasnt a rant!
Just watching Spain and Portugal show us exactly how non world class England and Italy currently are. Depressing

Francagoestohollywood · 29/06/2010 21:06

Dh is watching the football over his essays. I'm supporting Portugal...

We are half way through putting zanzariere on our inferiate (which I hate as they make me feel like I'm in prison, but have to admit they are handy), hopefuly that will help.

Delgirl, good luck looking for an AP, sorry I never got back to you about the house, we had a long string of weekends when we didn't get up til saturday afternoon. I'm sure it will be fine. Bet you are getting excited! Maybe an AP from the Rome area would be a good idea and you could stay in contact if they are nice, might come in handy.

Don't get me started on lackadaisical parenting! Gio a lakeside meetup would be cool. I have a vague memory of nice gelato in Anguillara.

DelGirl · 29/06/2010 21:32

Sputnik - Don't worry about the house, i'm sure it will be fine too and yes I am so excited, I eat, dream and sleep it and counting down the days. Good idea about someone from Rome. I have sent about 6 emails back and forth to one girl but she is from Sicily but studying in Parma. I say girl, she is 27. Watch this space. Hope you are all well

ps, if the meetup is at Bracciano, can I join you . Is that the nearest or is Turano?

Oh can I ask how long it takes you to Terminillo Sputnik on a good day? My neighbours may come out to ski in the new year, is it realistic to drive there most days do you think?

Sputnik · 29/06/2010 22:03

Terminillo is maybe a little over an hour, so quite do-able, we go quite often in the winter. There is usually decent snow by New Year so they should be ok.
Bracciano probably 1 and 1/2 hours from Sabina so not too close but a nice drive, very picturesque village I used to live in is on the way, Calcata, village of hippie weirdos artists.

Sputnik · 29/06/2010 22:15

I say that in the nicest possible way as a former hippie weirdo.

DelGirl · 30/06/2010 07:27
Grin
Francagoestohollywood · 30/06/2010 09:52

All these places you are listing sound wonderful.

Today is dd's last day ever at scuola materna ! She is very sad, she said "lucky x ad y, they still have another year"

OP posts:
DelGirl · 30/06/2010 10:13

oh wow Franca, big day for you all then. How does it feel for you?

Where abouts are you in Italy? Can we have a big meet up in the middle of Italy. lol, I won't need to travel very far

DelGirl · 30/06/2010 12:13

I have an au pair subject to refs of course! From Sicily, but she studies in Parma. And, she will be here next week

Rosa · 30/06/2010 13:33

Del girl things finally moving along then.
Zanzare are (along with humidity) my hate. They spray round here ( the residence) so its not too bad but as soon as you go a bit further out they are terrible. They don't disenfestare anymore in Venice . Minirosa has had 3 very bad bites swelling and very red ...alll from venice I add.
Hot here today and domani its solo as dh back to check the casa and to pay some money . He will be doing work as well. Not sure how am going to do piscina with both of them will see.
Franca when is dh having his teeth out?
Lakes I find them a bit scary to swim in to be honest but I worked for years in the north Lakes and people kept coming back year after year ........
catch up soon....

Francagoestohollywood · 30/06/2010 14:10

Delgirl, I'm in Milan, but I'd love to meet up in central Italy, anywhere I can reach by train!

Well, the last month has been emotional, as there was the "festa dei remigini" (remigini here in Milan are the 5/6 yrs old children in their last year at materna), then a party with the teachers. It all culminated last Friday when the teachers took the remigini out for lunch and had pizza

I was teary the other day when they gave us the big book with all the pics, drawing, activities that they did during the year. The teachers also typed everything the children said about the topics they were doing etc etc.

To be honest, the reason why I get emotional is that she had 2 lovely years (the first she was still in the uk and had 6 months in a private place after we moved) and I'm very grateful to her teachers who have been really fantastic.

Zanzare: apparently lots of comuni don't have funds to do disinfestazione anymore

Rosa, dh will know on friday when he has to have this operation.

Good luck for going solo tomorrow, I'm sure you'll have lots of fun. Are they both using braccioli now?

OP posts:
DelGirl · 30/06/2010 14:25

Thanks Rosa

Franca, I shall be passing by Milan early on the 8th of September so i'm hoping I don't get caught up in MOnza traffic???? Coming from the mont blanc and heading darn sarf and staying near Prato I think? Then 'home' yay

DelGirl · 30/06/2010 14:35

I think I will be teary eyed to as dd finishes her 1st year at primary in 4 weeks, the teachers are already crying because she is leaving but they have said she can come back lol and we are going to be emailing/cam the class when they have IT

DelGirl · 30/06/2010 14:37

rosa, just seen your pics, how CUTE are your dc's!!! And that cake is wonderful.

Francagoestohollywood · 30/06/2010 14:45

Oh that bit of tangeziale is always very congested Delgirl. You'll have to harm yourself with patience, I'm afraid. Traffic is bad here

Oh yes, I was an emotional wreck when ds left his primary in the UK.

OP posts:
DelGirl · 30/06/2010 14:56

Actually I will be going from Chatillon to Prato via Genova I think so not too close but the coast roads may be congested to mightn't they. When do you all head home from the summer hols usually? It's all booked no so no going back really. I don't mind, it's all beautiful

Francagoestohollywood · 30/06/2010 14:59

Yes, the autostrada around genova is a big pita, but on the 8th it shouldn't be that bad... (fingers crossed). It is beautiful though, I agree

OP posts:
DelGirl · 30/06/2010 15:00

I'm only guessing, I haven't seen the coast at all in Italy. Tell a lie, we went to Amalfi last year duh!!

DelGirl · 30/06/2010 15:01

we have all day to get to Prato. It is less than 300 miles so suggestions for a mid way lunch stop would be good. soooooooo excited. off to get dd, ciao x
