linzoid - think it's like an open audience with the spiritualist. Usually they speak from a podium/platform, and receive messages for people in the audience, which they then try and place.
My nan used to be very involved with her spiritualist church, thru which we have been honoured to meet some very special people, who are spiritualist. don't think they would necessarily say they were clairvoyant tho' - they largely spoke to pass on messages from the spirit world, not see into the future if you like - bit different. Hope you have a good evening.

linzoid, no personal experience, though I do feel fairly open to the idea that spiritualism and contacting the spirits is not perhaps as barmy as was once thought. My Gran went to spiritualist meetings for a number of years after her youngest daughter was tragically killed in a train accident, aged 13. My Gran is religious, but was obviously searching for something outside what her church could offer. Do you have a particular reason for going to this meeting or is it just out of curiousity?

I've done this several times. I saw someone when I was expecting my 3rd (but not showing) & she knew I was pregnant & accurately told me I would have a daughter "and sons"; mentioned my craving for pears & a number of other things. The last one I went to I wasn't impressed with. She was angling for info the whole time & didn't tell me anything specific. That was 10 years ago & I haven't bothered since.

Let us know how it went, linzoid.

I went to a phsychic fair once. One of the clairvoyants was awful ... she said that I would get married but not yet as I wasn't ready (I had just celebrated my 2nd wedding anniversary!) and that I wanted children but wouldn't have them yet as I was not ready (DS was about 8months at the time!!) .... I even had my wedding ring on and wasn't hiding it. She also said she could tell I was desperate to go to America (in fact there are many more places in the world I would like to see before the US so I am not that desperate!) She was hungarian and spoke really quickly and I couldn't understand much of what she was going on about but she did say she was having messages from an elderly man who was bald and was telling me not to worry ... I am not a skeptic about this stuff but I did laugh because I imagine everyone on the planet has a grandfather or great grandfather who has 'passed on' that had little hair!!!!
The other guy I saw just depressed me ... asked to hold my wedding ring and said that he didn't get any good vibes from it and why was I married to this man and I should seriously think about my relationship before I committed to any more children with him. And also that I would have 3 pregnancies ... I said "ooh ... 3 children?" and he said "No, 3 pregnancied" ... it really upset me!
I do believe in clairvoyants (my grandmother was one) and I am really into phsychics and stuff but I have learned to have a very open mind about them after that. Especially if they ask for lots of money ....
The only thing I would say to you Linzoid is ... if your life is really good and happy at the moment ... DON'T see a phsychic as they can upset you!!

I hope you have a good time tonight .... let us know what happens!

Linzoid
How did it go?

mears · 29/06/2003 11:36

I went many years ago to a woman who was well known in the area. She did not accept money in her hand but she did if you put it on the table! Anyway, she told my mum lots of things that had happened in her life which were uncanny. She told me that my carrer was being watched over by an aunt who had been a midwife and that I would be successful. She also told me I was going to marry a man in a white coat. I thought ooh, doctor, dentist?
When I met my dh he did wear white coat - he delivered bread for Mother's Pride

My MIL is a spiritualist. She doesn't do readings of the future or that sort of thing, (or if she does, she keeps it secret!). She communicates with those who have passed on and also heals with her hands. She was raised in India and I think the spiritual side of that country has never left her. In Indonesia the spiritual world is part and parcel of daily life. Everyone 'talks' to their dead relatives, ghosts are commonplace and on Bali, offerings are made twice daily to the gods to ensure good luck.

An open circle normally means that everyone within the circle is allowed to 'work' not just one dedicated medium.

How did it go Linzoid? (and why didn't I 'know' that this thread was happening yesterday so that I could join in? )

linzoid · 30/06/2003 16:02

HI,
well i went along with my friend to the church. I have always been interested in psycic stuff and always wanted to go out of curiosity but also my nanna and her son (my uncle) are terminally ill and i was kind of hoping that a message might come from my grandad about them. I have been teaching myself to read tarot, i love all that stuff. Anyway, it was a £1:50 donation and the lady gave out lots of messages to people (there was about 15 people there) i was sort of slightly skeptical at first as i know there must be some bogus ones in amongst the true pyscics. While she was talking to one lady she said "who was it that suffocated?" the lady didn't know and the medium said sorry maybe i have left you now. It was a lady sitting opposite who had some realtive that had suffocated. She went round almost everybody by the end...except me! boo hoo, bit disapointing. I am going to go again tho as it is a different speakers they have on. Only thing was that they all seemed to know each other really well and we felt a bit like the outsiders.

Did you see the documentary on Ch4 a while back about clairvoyants? It was very good.
I went to a spiritualist church a while ago as part of my research for my dissertation. I'm afraid to say I left a total non-believer. I went both to a 'service' and to a 'reading', and it seemed to me that the 'readers' were picking up subliminal messages from the audience, such as head nodding rather than anything else. Also people were offering them bits of information without realising it.
Plus all the 'readers' there had a spirit guide who just happened to be Indians called 'Big Chief PeaceLily' or something predictable like that. They also tore into my religion which I felt was rather rude as I had not gone along to argue religion, but had entered with an open mind.

A woman came up to me last Saturday and told me she had some information for me and could she call around to give me a reading the following evening, as she was a bit worried for me.Needless to say I was pretty shocked and started to get worried. I know she is a tarot reader as she done my cards about 18 months ago but TBH I dont know her very well or see her that much as she lives elsewhere and comes on our estate to see her mother every now and then. She is a new age hippy type.
Anyway she came round the following evening and she sat down and told me alot of things that was going on in my life. She knew everything and I asked dh to come in on the sitting as it was quite unbelievable and you had to be there to believe it. I was stunned, dh was shocked, she just rattled off everything that has happened to us the last few months. She told me who was behind all the trouble and even described this woman. Needless to say a perfect description of my sister. Then she got the cards out and it was the same except for a couple of added things.
That someone had recently got engaged - my dd1 got engaged 2 days before.
Also that a man in his 30's was very ill- I never knew anyone who was ill in that age group so dismissed it to find out a couple of days later that my BIL has something wrong with his liver.
May I say I was quite shocked at what she told me.
I am one of these people that dont say nothing until they have finished. Not even a yes or no as an answer.
She also told me that the spirits were not happy on our wedding day and they felt sorry for us and surrounded us.Funnily we have odd swirls on one photograph, with us cutting the cake. She also told me that there was a man helping me but he was living, she described him as tall and dark. All the men in both our families are tall and dark. Anyway I got the wedding album down and asked her if she could tell me who the man was who was helping me. She just opened the album and said that is him.It was my brother .He is tall and dark and he has been helping me.She also seen the odd photo and pointed out a woman with a baby sitting down and also a man with a hat.She said there was 2 more figures and they were male.Only with her pointing them out did I then notice the figures and the first two are quite noticeable.
In total she spent 3 hrs with me. She wanted no payment but I managed to get her to take £5 for a cab home. And that was a strugggle in itself.
Any thoughts???????
ps she is not a mumsnetter as she has no children.

Oakmaiden · 25/08/2003 15:58

A bit spooky, that, doormat. From what you hae said she sounds very genuine - especially as she refused money. But was what she told you helpful or enlightening in any way? Or was she just telling you things that you already knew (or would shortly find out?)

M2T · 25/08/2003 16:03

Ooo Doormat... very eerie! But what was her point?? What did she need to tell you?

And was she saying the woman sitting down holding the baby and the other 2 men were ghosts in your wedding photos?

Ooo I just got another shiver!

doormat · 27/08/2003 17:19

Oakmaiden and mum2toby she just basically told me what I already knew but for those few added extras. It was very eerie. The weirdest thing about it was the fact she could physically descibe people and their personalities.

SIL has taken interest in photograph. She scanned it etc and there are definitely people in the photo but more than 4.The woman holding the baby is very clear when enlarged and can see her facial features clearly.SIL has sent it off to Derek Acorah's website, hopefully he may find some explanation.
