It doesnt matter what is on the birth certificate, call her what you think suits her
Don't forget, when she is 7 she will decide that she hates her name and demand to be called something else; my niece Rachel became Phoebe for an entire year!

Blu · 25/07/2005 17:36

But don't you think Sophie Phillipson has too many 's's and 'ph's? What if she has a lisp???

Why not swap her names? Hannah Megan Phillipson? It has a nice rythym, and at the moment 'Megan Hannah' is a bit harder to say because the 'n' of Megan runs into the 'hannah', making it a bit awkward to say and sounding like Meg and anna'!

I LIKE Hannah Megan Phillipson!

megandsoph · 25/07/2005 17:45

I agree with blu on hannah megan philipson, tis beautiful

flamesparrow · 25/07/2005 17:53

I'm with Hannah Megan... and agree with Fleur being too fffy, and Sophie causing problems (could be fun if her teacher has a lisp though )

KristinaM · 25/07/2005 17:53

Megan Hannah Philipson sounds like Meg and Hannah Philipson.
Agree with other comments about Sophie and Fleur - they are lovely names but not with your surname.

suedonim · 25/07/2005 17:53

With your surname...
1 Hannah
2 Megan
3 Fleur
4 Sophie

If you really like Fleur, why not give it as an extra name and then your dd will have a choice.

Rating the names on their own...
1 Fleur (Have loved the name since the exquisite Susan Hampshire played the role of Fleur in the Forsyte Saga, back in the Days of Yore. Also love the name 'Nyree' after the actress who played Irene.)

2 Sophie
3 Hannah
4 Megan

When I was pg with ds1, in 1975 I was reading a series of novels called the Jalna books about a family in Canada. The characters had amazing names and how ds didn't become a Finch, Wakefield or Pheasant, I don't know!

katierocket · 25/07/2005 17:55

OUt of these choices I'd go for Megan
Sorry to say this but IMO Fleur could easily turn into eruuugghhhh....in the playground IFYKWIM

sansouci · 25/07/2005 18:04

My dh's sister is called Fleur but tis short for Phyllida (sp?). however, i very much like Hannah Megan. it has a great ring to it!

sansouci · 25/07/2005 18:11

Sophie's a wonderful name, too. the names i liked for dd were Arabella / Imogen / Olivia / Sabrina / Francesca / Alexandra / Madeleine / Sophia / Julia / Antonia. We picked 2 of these for dd and another is my name. Guess which?

sansouci · 25/07/2005 18:20

Celia's good, too. not helping, am i?

zippy539 · 25/07/2005 18:31

I love Fleur. Agree with the folk who have said try calling her it for a bit and see how it sits. If you like it then either change the name, add it in as a middle name or just call her it regardless. My best friend has been called by her middle name all her life because when she was six months old her Mum decided her given name was completely wrong.

janeybops · 25/07/2005 18:36

I know a few people known by names that are not their official names!

My gran was born while her dad was at war (Audrey) and when he got back she was 2. So it got changed to Nancy, which is what everyone called her. But it was never changed officially or anything.

anorak · 25/07/2005 18:45

Why not call her anorak? You can't go wrong with a nice name like that.

tortoiseshell · 25/07/2005 18:47

Ooh, with Phillipson as a surname I would DEFINITELY go for Hannah - Sophie and Fleur too fff or sss, and Megan Phillipson could sound like 'Meg and Philip's Son'. But Hannah Phillipson is lovely.

tortoiseshell · 25/07/2005 18:49

Given that Fleur means flower, I would have thought you could easily use it as a nickname without it being official anyway!

sansouci · 25/07/2005 18:49

Just keep what you've given her & worry about something else!

anorak · 25/07/2005 18:52

"anorak Phillipson". Got a classy ring to it, don't you think?

geekgrrl · 25/07/2005 19:18

I've got a Hannah and people very very rarely mishear her name as 'Anna'. FWIW I think it's a beautiful name, not too commonly used (she's the only Hannah at her school) but everybody knows how to spell it.
I gave dd2 an unusual name and really regret it. I always need to spell it and people often mispronounce it, so really wouldn't recommend Fleur.

Blu · 25/07/2005 19:20

What about 'Phillipson Blu'?
No perhaps not, sounds like a kind of cheese, or clematis species.

Fauve · 25/07/2005 19:45

Fauve is a lovely girl's name

Suedonim, the Forsyte Saga/Susan Hampshire is why I love Fleur; only - apart from being exceptionally pretty and lively - she's not really a 'goodie' is she? I mean, she's not a very nice character in the books. (Not that that's perhaps particularly relevant these days.)

I was in a complete quandry when naming my second son, so much so that seriously considered calling him my first sons middle name. At six weeks of age I agreed a name with dp, which although v. nice and totally inoffensive my heart wasn't in it. Dp trotted off to register him only for me to call him and say 'don't do it'-too late at the desk completing certificate. The registrar told him at the time not to worry it could be changed following baptism, which we did. He was never called the name on first certificate but I seemed to need to do this in order to come to a firm decision. I found the whole time really stressful and it consumed those early weeks. Looking back it was totally out of proportion and I found Aloha's comment about a decision being permanent, which is the difficulty, very perceptive. Had I known I could have up to a year to finalise the name I would have taken it and it would have driven me mad!

I think you should choose a name because it means something to you, you like it and will see a child through life. Others disagree such as Lynda lee Potter who once said she deliberately gave her children middle class names in order to get a head start in life. I guess it depends on our own life experiences and perhaps insecurities.

One thing is certain our children will have no idea we put so much thought into it and at some stage will say I wish I was...

Sorry too long, very rarely post so will spare you next time .

Davros · 25/07/2005 21:36

Don't like Megan, rather clunky imo
Hannah is VERY "popular" and don't like it much
Sophie is nice but boring
Fleur is the least boring but don't like it or dislike one way or the other, its a bit pretentious

starlover · 25/07/2005 21:40

we only had 2 names for a boy. i LOVED the one i chose for ages... but the nearer it got to the birth the less sure i became about it.
when ds was born people assumed that was going to be his name, and i said that yes, we would call him that... but was still not 100% sure.
LOVE LOVE LOVE it now.

it was just as others have said on here... knowing that he'll have this name for life, and that it's myt responsibility.
it's a really fab name though and i am so glad we chose it!

roosmum · 25/07/2005 21:51
