Enormously satisfying do-it-yourself surgery

OK, I'm not talking about anything like the "amputate your own haemorrhoid" (which was bloody brilliant) but smaller things...

For me, it's cutting off skin tags. One snip with sharp cuticle scissors and they're gone. I hate them. I became festooned with them while pregnant. Gah!!!

Anyone else want to share?

pulling out ingrown toenails with pliars

cyb · 20/03/2010 16:25

Urgh god, are you supposed to do that?

Isnt that a GP's job?

getting a splinter out is about as hardcore as I get

Maggie00 · 20/03/2010 16:27

oh the amateur arse doctor thread! a classic and no mistake. was it all about removing a haemorrhoid? I wasn't sure!

I don't think I've performed any surgery on myself. AM I unusual?! I'm tempted to shave off a mole but I will restrain myself.

coldtits · 20/03/2010 16:31

Of COURSE you're not supposed to do it.

morethanyoubargainfor · 20/03/2010 16:33

regularly lanced my boils, as everytime i go to GP he just asks my advice and says i am more of an expert than he is on my condition .

Maggie00 · 20/03/2010 16:35

Do you get many boils?! I don't think I've ever had one.

Can you imagine going to the doctor AFTER diy surgery and having to 'fess up.

"I did this with a stanley knife doc, it wasn't as simple as I thought it would be, yes it turns out you do need to study for 7 years to be a doctor, who knew?! anyway, could you stem the flow of blood before I die?? And please don't discuss this in the staffroom. Thank you."

cyb · 20/03/2010 16:36

there are few pleasures in life greater than popping a boil

BellaBearisWideAwake · 20/03/2010 16:38

mmmmm removing ingrown hairs, love it!

ant3nna · 20/03/2010 16:40

I like retrieving ingrown hairs too, especially from DPs face. He doesn't like it so much. I even keep special tweezers for the procedure

BelleDameSansMerci · 20/03/2010 16:42

Eeeeew... Just eeeew.

morethanyoubargainfor · 20/03/2010 17:13

Maggie i get 100's but like i said i have a condition that causes them that was triggered during pregnacy and now will never go away!

There is nothing quite like the pop of a boil .

Jacksmama · 20/03/2010 18:33

Of course you're not supposed to slice off skin tags yourself - especially not if they're on the eyelid!

morethanyoubargainfor · 20/03/2010 21:10

I don't know about you JAcks but it makes it all the more pleasurable knowing you are not supposed to be doing it .

LouIsOnAHighwayToHell · 20/03/2010 21:26

Mmmm DIY is fun . I once removed a 2 inch piece of wood from my foot and a 6 inch stick that had embedded itself in my leg.

I have this fantasy that all my pimples and ingrown hairs combine into one once a year and I get to pop it. Is that wierd?

duffpancake · 20/03/2010 21:38

I removed a post from dh's tooth and made him a temporary filling over the Xmas holidays. It was so satisfying I considered training to be a dentist. But then the filling fell out the first time he tried to eat something.

BattyKoda · 20/03/2010 21:43

Can you just 'cut off' your own skin tags....? Really? Does it hurt?? How do you do it, right at the bottom?

MmmCoffee · 20/03/2010 21:44

Skin tags! I remove mine too. Nothing quite like the feeling when you're holding a tissue waiting for it to stop bleeding and you know you've got rid of the bugger.

Why do such little tiny things bleed so much??

YourCallIsImportant · 20/03/2010 21:45

Watching the skin tag question with interest.

Hollyoaks · 20/03/2010 21:46

I lanced an abscess last week, it was my first time and very satisfying not to mention a huge relief.

I did it with a pair of nail scissors

BattyKoda · 20/03/2010 21:47

Oh, blood.

I doubt I'd be any good at DIY surgery

MmmCoffee · 20/03/2010 21:53

at BattyKoda

They don't bleed a LOT, they just bleed for longer than you'd think! It's just like a pinprick, like when you accidentally stab your finger with a needle. Tiny, tiny spot of blood but it keeps coming. You have to hold the tissue there for about 5 mins or it just starts up again.

I use nail clippers for the bigger ones, but for the smaller ones I just nip them in my finger & thumbnail and do a quick pull.

I shudder at using scissors though, the idea of 'snipping' - eeeewwww!

BattyKoda · 20/03/2010 21:57

Promise?

If I go and get my nail clippers now, you promise I won't be covered in blood and contemplating calling an ambulance?

BattyKoda · 20/03/2010 21:57

does it hurt? - be honest!

weegiemum · 20/03/2010 22:03

I once lanced a tooth abscess with a needle - it was the most immediate release of pain I have ever experienced!

Cut off skin tags, pop anything that will pop!

I am practically a professional amateur surgeon!

MmmCoffee · 20/03/2010 22:08

It hurts about as much as sticking yourself with a needle. Lasts about as long too.

If you want to be safe, call 999 before you do it so they're on their way
