Tell me about Bridport, Dorset

My lovely younger brother moves to Bridport tomorrow.

He's only ever visited the town 3 times - two 1 day trips for interviews and one 2 day trip to find a flat!

I know he's nervous - I would be! - He's moving more than 250 miles away from home for a job. It's a good job, with good prospects but he's going to be all on his own and 4 and a half hours away from most of his family and friends

Can anyone tell me about Bridport so that maybe I can help him feel a bit more at home there?

He's 25 if that helps.

they lecture you in the shops if you don't bring your own shopping bags.

GoldenSnitch · 10/03/2010 21:39

Thankyou BadGardener, I'll get him some bags for life.

yes, v important
There is a fabulous bakery there called Leakers (or something like that) which he must try.

samsonthecat · 10/03/2010 21:43

Its a lovely place, my parents live there.

GoldenSnitch · 10/03/2010 21:44

Bakery might have to wait till I visit.

DB is egg, milk and gluten intolerant - amongst other things.

They also have an excellent theatre and are real foodies too. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall spends time there at the annual food festival (well worth a visit).

Sounds good. 19th June says the website.

Hopefully he should be settled enough by then to cope with me, DH, 3 year old DS and 6 month old DD - maybe

There's a fabulous Indian - looks tiny from the outside but the food is fab. My DS raves about the toyshop .

You are about 15 mins drive from beaches.
There are some lovely pubs

Used to live about 20 mins away.

dreamingofsun · 11/03/2010 10:11

dorset is lovely - i think its the nicest county in the UK. lovely beaches and countryside and some decent shopping - though not in bridport! we chose to move here about 20 years ago and don't ever want to leave. there are lots of people like this. the weather tends to be better than further north too.

GoldenSnitch · 11/03/2010 10:16

What's the Indian called JollyPirate? DB has his mate going down with him today to help him move stuff, maybe I could suggest DB takes him out for an Indian to thank him?

Maybe some god pub suggestions too?

He's moving from Yorkshire dreaming, better not tell him Dorset is a better county - Yorkshiremen get very upset about that sort of thing ;)

he will be converted soon. though to be honest i don't think i've ever been to yorkshire - it does look nice on the tele. it should be much warmer here - weatherwise

GoldenSnitch · 11/03/2010 10:24

I can't talk, I left Yorkshire 13 years ago and haven't been back since except to visit family!

In fact, out of 4 children, only 1 is now left there!!

It's called Taj Mahal and is on East Street (any Bridport local will be able to point them in the right direction).

GoldenSnitch · 11/03/2010 10:39

Ooh, I think his new flat is near there...

...okay - now I am REALLY envious.

Do tell him I am coming to stay........

GoldenSnitch · 11/03/2010 10:48

It's only a 2 bed flat and I will be taking over the second bedroom Jolly

GoldenSnitch · 12/03/2010 20:17

He's moved the last of his stuff today. My little brother officially no longer lives in Yorkshire!!

dreamingofsun · 12/03/2010 21:04

but at least he's moving to a lovely place, where you can enjoy visiting him - thats not to say yorkshire isn't of course

GoldenSnitch · 12/03/2010 22:44

I'm looking forward to visiting him. Just feeling a bit sorry for him cause he doesn't know anyone there.
