can someone please tell me how you colour cells using microsoft excel?

Format menu, select Cell ... Then click on Pattern tab.

Then you can select the colour.

Let me know if this doesn't work for you ...

Get your formatting toolbar displayed, then click the button with the little tipping bucket on it.

That's View - Toolbars - Formatting (just in case you needed that too)
