we have a 3 walled u-shaped kitchen and have just bought an ikea kitchen for about £1500. we are getting it installed by a builder and have bought tiles - the total will be about £2500 (but it's a very small room).

yes, but he's working with DH putting it in. i have heard that it can be a lot cheaper to get your own builder to do it... it's worth getting a quote.

The fitting is always what makes it expensive -you can pay the price of your kitchen again - we just have and we used our own fitter. Altogether with plastering, electrics and complete fitting we've paid about £2500 I think (or a bit more).

We paid about the same for our kitchen and dh said he'd fit it to save money. I'm still waiting for it to be finished 2 years later. Definitely get someone in to do it!

DH had a week off work to do it when I started my maternity leave. You wouldn't believe the mess and chaos. 4 weeks later when it was useable but not finished I made them down tools, as I didn't want dd arriving in all the chaos. I kept demanding to know when they were going to have it finished and kept storming out of the back door exclaiming "I'm having a baby in case you hadn't noticed"! I'm sure they were rolling their eyes behind my back.

DH's friend is a chippy and worked as a fitter for B&Q before. His advice was to never let them fit a kitchen for you, use a chippy, joiner or fitter.
(no offence meant to B&Q fitters!)

Surfermum · 15/07/2005 14:10

No .

HappyDaddy · 15/07/2005 17:10

My uncle is a kitchen fitter for B&Q. He gives two prices 1) Price that B&Q charge for supply and fitting and 2) Price that HE will charge for supply and fitting of same kitchen.
