Who thinks vegetarians are cranks?

only asking to glean opinion (not start a war!)

I was under the misguided illusion that being veggi was no longer a particularly interesting issue... yet I had a gang of adults gang up on me yesterday simply because I asked if there were going to be veggi burgers (as well as the usual stuff) at the school summer fair!

Why on earth do I need to justify my eating habits/choices to anyone?

I've just remembered a rant I meant to have. Airplane food! We had booked dp's veggie meal when we booked our holiday in February, and then again when we checked in on Sunday. Yet they didn't have it recorded, and told him he was lucky (we were in row 4) that they still had some. I've known him and other veggies have to go hungry (after politely explaining why they can't have the chicken!). However, what I wanted to rant about was the lady opposite. She asked for a veggie meal for her son, and said no, she hadn't booked it. So They gave her a veggie meal. The son turned his nose up at that and so was offered the meat version instead and had that. In other words it turned out that she had taken a veggie meal just so that her fussy son could have a choice! Not impressed, especially if it meant someone went without.

I'll cheerfully cook for vegetarians, I won't grill them about their dietary choices, and I won't sneak chicken stock into their vegetable lasagne (only use vegetable stock anyway) but I do draw the line at eating spam sandwiches instead of vegetable samosas. I don't expect anyone to eat all the pasta salad and avoid, say, the goats cheese canapes just because I loathe the former and adore the latter!

I should think so too!

My dad is chair of the pta at my brother's school, and has really taken on board the veggie thing at bbq's. Previously there were no veggie options available. It takes someone who either is veggie themselves or knows someone well who is to realise how important it is to have separate cooking racks etc.

I find that older people still think it's a bit strange to be a veggie. I spend most boxing days at my oldest friend's house and we all play the rizla game. Her parents invariably choose either Linda McCartney or Ronald McDonald for me as they think it's so funny. They never fail to kill themselves laughing at the 'irony' of it. I have to laugh.
