(i'm just being a bit anti-french )

PiccadillyCircus · 06/07/2005 11:53

I think it should be Paris as well. Don't really think it would help London it being in London.

handlemecarefully · 06/07/2005 11:54

We haven't hosted since the 1940's have we?

PiccadillyCircus · 06/07/2005 11:55

But would still get quite excited if it were London .

handlemecarefully · 06/07/2005 11:55

bundle - I wouldn't be a bit anti french if I were you - even in jest. You'll get flamed!

Earlybird · 06/07/2005 11:55

If I was a voting member of the Olympic Committee, I'd be afraid to give it to France. They have too many strikes that bring the city to a halt, IMO. I can well imagine a scenario where some bunch of civil servants or airport workers or whoever go on strike around the Olympics. Would be a completel and utter nightmare.

SoupDragon · 06/07/2005 11:55

Oh, I simply have no real opinion about it, Flashingnose. I guess it would be nice to have a London olympics but it really makes no difference to me.

Here's an interesting thought though - what if they had a joint London/Paris olympics. If we managed to get a high speed rail link in place (hahahahah!) it would be perfectly workable. Halve the cost and hassle for each city.

handlemecarefully · 06/07/2005 11:55

(I did!)

PiccadillyCircus · 06/07/2005 11:56
  1. Should have been 1940 but obviously wasn't.
SoupDragon · 06/07/2005 11:56

I think I'd be a bit wary of giving it to London since we manage to stuff mostt hings up

flashingnose · 06/07/2005 11:56

Just once, I would love something to unite our country, that we could feel proud of and that we could get our children involved in without the cynicism that usually engulfs anything that we attempt to do on the world stage.

Is it only Winter Olympics that are held in strange little out-of-the-way places? (Can you tell I pay little attention to all this?)

hmc, what did you say?

handlemecarefully · 06/07/2005 11:57

PC, I know, I said 1940's not 1940...honestly, I'm not that thick

flashingnose · 06/07/2005 11:57

They tend to have snow, NQC

teeavee · 06/07/2005 11:57

Soupdragon, that is genius!!!! - then everyone would HAVE to get on, paris and london taxi drivers would all have to attend language courses, and the English might start feeling European at long last!

NotQuiteCockney · 06/07/2005 11:57

Um, flashingnose, if the Brits did anything without cynicism or sarcasm, wouldn't they stop being Brits? (I say they as I'm not really one ...)

handlemecarefully · 06/07/2005 11:58

bundle,

I started a thread about the EC rebate argument between Chirac and Blair, and mentioned (whispers now...the 'bloody' french). Boy did I live to regret it!

flashingnose · 06/07/2005 11:58

We last managed it in 1966 NQC, so we must be due another

NotQuiteCockney · 06/07/2005 11:59

But lots of cities have snow ... but maybe not big ski hills ...

Lets not forget that ALL parts of the UK (Scotland and Wales too!) will 'benefit' if London wins' - the Football is going to be be held in most of the 'big' stadiums around - and it's a fact that if people have travelled from the other side of the world to come to the Olympics they're certainly going to travel around teh country too - boosting the tourism economy

NotQuiteCockney · 06/07/2005 12:00

Was '66 the World Cup win? If so, don't worry, when I was working with blokes, I was plenty sarcastic about all that.

bundle · 06/07/2005 12:00

hmc, that was YOU? they still don't deserve the b*y olympics
