I don't know if anyone has experienced anything similar but here is my story.
June 2006 I had my daughter. Doctors were on my back about which contraception I should use to avoid giving my daughter a sibling too soon. Looking at all the options, I settled on the Mirena coil (It promised no periods and little or no menstrual cramps. What woman could say no?) I got the coil put in August 2006. I had no periods for a year and no mood swings, weight gain etc.
October 2007 it all changed. I began having spotting and irregular, heavy bleeding. It got so bad that the doctor gave me tablets to stop the bleeding as I was losing so much. By July 2007 it sorted itself out and was irregular for a week but monthly. Everything was not too bad until June 2009. I experienced very severe abdomen pains. The hospital doctors treated this as kidney problems and prescribed pain relief for a few weeks. My periods then started a new pattern - they'd start for a week, stop for two wih some spotting inbetween and start again for 3 weeks. Early January 2010 I was admitted to hospital again! The severe pains in my abdomen had returned. This time it felt worse than childbirth!I was also having difficulty passing urine and having bowel movements (it felt tender along my pelvic muscle) The gynaecologist gave me a scan and then discovered that the coil had been stuck in my womb and had created a small hole. Also I had an ovarian cyst which had bled into itself, also causing problems. Cysts are common with the coil apparently.
It took an hour in surgery having a laporotomy (incision across abdomen) and the cyst and coil removed but I am now a lot happier for it. I was one of he lucky ones. In some cases the ovaries and some bowel have to be removed as a result of the wandering coil. I now have to rest 6-8 weeks and look at alternative contraception. There is no way I'll get the coil again. I have looked at websites detailing what can go wrong with the Mirena. I just wish I'd read those sites 3 and a half year ago!
I would like to know if anyone else has had similar proplems. If so, please post, I'd love to hear your story
