Can I use this car seat?

Have DD is stage 0+ car seat, coming to end of life and need to move her up in next month or two (she is 13 months). Have DS's next stage car seat.

Question is - Can I use it as it has been stored in a garage for the last 18 months? Is it silly to think that the cold might have damaged the plastic or stressed the seat? The seat itself is nearly 4 years old. I know there are recommendations as to seats older than 5/6 years and DD will use the seat for 2-3 years.

Would you use it or buy a new one?

TIA for answering a dull question

I reused ours, fatigue never occurred to me and dd used the same one as her brother until it was about 7 years old.

EldonAve · 08/01/2010 10:48

I would use it
Over 10 years old and I'd be closely examining it

I rang Graco about this when we had ds2, they said 5 years is the maximum they recommend for their seats so I imagine you'll be ok

mosschops30 · 08/01/2010 15:38

sorry didnt read all your post.

No in that case Id get a new one

mowcop · 08/01/2010 15:41

I have used the same car seats for all 3 of mine. However, a friend of mine recently had a minor rear end bump and was told by the insurance company that she should replace both her car seats as they are "like cycle helmets" eg if dropped etc they can be damaged but not show it. I've never heard this before though and my 3 are all still going strong!

Thanks mosschops, it's a maxi-cosi. They say that you shouldn't use it after 5-6 to allow for things such as sunlight wear on the plastic.

Was wondering if the cold in the garage could have an effect as it's been quite a while.

I am erring on the side of replacing but was after back up as DH will not want to.

Actually just put my brain in and remembered it is a Britax Renaissance.

Personally I would use it, but you sound a bit stressed about it!

EldonAve · 08/01/2010 16:36

sometimes the Britax ones have an expiry date on

I woukdn't use it.

It's been sat in a garage for a good couple of years with extremes of heat in summer and cold in winter.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 09/01/2010 10:33

Thank you, Eldon I didn't know that. Shall look.
