Oh I'm so pleased with myself although it's sad, can I share a laundry tip?!

We have just started hanging shirts and childrens' tops and dresses on the line on coat hangers! and it cuts out so much work because when they're dry you just hang them up! This doesn't work if you do ironing but if, like me, you don't, it cuts out the whole taking them off the line/folding them up/taking them upstairs/putting them on hangers/hanging them up stages! I am ridiculously pleased with myself about this as I am a lazy arse who detests washing and usually waits until no-one has any clean pants before tackling it.

There's bound to be a flaw in this new system but I haven't found it yet. I thank you for listening. Please pray for me to get a job soon

Damn. How uncool. I meant

spidermama · 30/06/2005 20:20

Yes! It worked. In that case I'm getting the hang of this

Magscat · 30/06/2005 20:25

I can vouch for the 'squash 'em flat in the basket' approach too.

I get annoyed when dh squashes them in a crumpled heap though cos he doesn't fold them properly.

Still I can't moan cos at least he does his share of washing & cleaning & nearly all the cooking.

spidermama · 30/06/2005 21:14

Great Mags. Mine is great at cooking bit sh*te at laundry. Just doesn't enter his conciousness.

redsky · 30/06/2005 22:26

i cheat big time - i pay to get my ironing done. But I think it is money well spent. However if we get our mega mortgage to buy my dream house in the next month or so, I may have to think again!

Kibby · 30/06/2005 23:23

I used to pay for my ironing to be done and then bought a super-duper steam generator iron which cost an arm and a leg but now I do it all myself because it takes such a short time to get through a basket - definitely look into it!

kawa · 30/06/2005 23:49

Kibby what make is the steam generator iron? I need a new one and want ALL the details although I have found a reliable (i'm reliably informed!) guy who irons 45 items for £15!

Kibby · 01/07/2005 00:14

It's a Tefal Pro Express and cost about £170 (my sister bought one for £120 in Costco) but in fear of sounding liek I should be institutionalised, it's fanfuckingtastic - sooooo quick, ironing is almost a pleasure and just think of all those £15 you'll save over the years !!!

Skribble · 01/07/2005 01:04

I want some one who irons and puts it away in the wardrobes and drawers. I have huge mountains all over the house. Mind you I don't think it would all fit anyway.

Can't cope with socks either I never wear pairs. I keep thinking I will just chuck out the 5 bin bags of odd socks and start again with new socks for everyone.

Flum · 01/07/2005 01:36

I do that.

My dp doesn't even un button his shirts so they get washed buttoned up, hung up on hangers buttoned up, Ironed on hangers buttoned up. It works a treat. 5.5 mins per shirt.

Sad, me. Nah.

mandyc66 · 01/07/2005 08:58

the ironing isnt the worst bit is it!!! I agree its the putting away!!!! I have piles of ironed clothes waiting to be put in drawers. It usually needs ironing again when it comes to wearing it!!!
I cant just iron as its needed theres just too much!!!

Caligula · 01/07/2005 12:07

Kibby at the risk of being very dull, why does ironing take so much less time with one of those sooper dooper irons? What's so good about them? And how long do they last?

2GIRLS · 01/07/2005 12:53

Love this thread!! Have just started ironing again and am very excited cos have discovered ironing water!! Love it (tho can't actually smell it on clothes it's a psychological thing).
But does anyone know what the secret of folding ironed clothes is? When I've just ironed anything I fold it up really carefully put it away but when I take it out it its crumpled.
Also, I have to iron in the kitchen cos of high sockets, do you have to use extension lead in living room? (I think I need to find a little hobby.....)

Enid · 01/07/2005 12:54

dont you get funny hanger marks on your clothes if they dry on hangers or do you have to use padded ones

WideWebWitch · 01/07/2005 12:56

Enid, I have a mixture of wooden, plastic and metal ones and no, only seem to get hanger marks sometimes with the metal ones. But no, we don't all look like we've been hung up!

mil has special hooks she ises to secure htem to the line

mandyc66 · 01/07/2005 14:15

2 girls I love that ironing water too but ds1 says it makes him smell like a puff so dont use it!!!!! Hanging washing on the line makes a mark anyway so I wouldnt worry if it cuts down on ironing!!!

2GIRLS · 02/07/2005 13:30

Can I give you a laundry tip?.. My friend hangs her clothes on the line by sort of draping them over the line then pegs them, so she ends up with a line across her clothes. But...if you hung them up and pegged from the hem of a garment, no line = less ironing. (Sorry if everyone knows this already)

lmccrean · 02/07/2005 14:56

I tried putting them out on hangers once and then went into town, it got windy and and I came home to a yard covered in clothes so where do you get the wee blue clips to hold them on?

I dont actually mind ironing, but if I can hang them up so they dont need ironed, then that one less job to do, and more time to be on here ;)

hercules · 02/07/2005 14:59

God, you're a genius, www. I'll do that.

WideWebWitch · 10/07/2005 13:56

Dp has just pointed out this, which, for a one off £900 means you never have to iron a shirt again!

i always put things on hangers to dry..on the shower rail as unfortunately we have no garden..
am i one of the few who thinks it pointless to iron everything and then put it away?
seems much better to put things in drawers/cupboards etc (and the creases on humg up things tend to pretty much 'drop out' anyway)...then iron as and when you want to wear the things
