We have just started hanging shirts and childrens' tops and dresses on the line on coat hangers! and it cuts out so much work because when they're dry you just hang them up! This doesn't work if you do ironing but if, like me, you don't, it cuts out the whole taking them off the line/folding them up/taking them upstairs/putting them on hangers/hanging them up stages! I am ridiculously pleased with myself about this as I am a lazy arse who detests washing and usually waits until no-one has any clean pants before tackling it.

There's bound to be a flaw in this new system but I haven't found it yet. I thank you for listening. Please pray for me to get a job soon

Blimey - a thread about ironing with a whole subsection about BJs - only on MN

WideWebWitch · 30/06/2005 09:23

ha ha mum2girls! Alibubbles, if you hang them properly, i.e. flat on an airer or on a hanger they don't look creased, honestly!

www - great tip
I HATE ironing and do as little as I can get away with - as DH works from home, I am a sahm and kids not yet at school that is very little ironing.
Yesterday I took my pair over to see my dad in the afternoon so took off the clothes they had been wearing all morning to give them a quick iron and put them back on again When we got there he said to my DD1 - you are later than I thought and she pipes up with - "yes, Grandpa, thats cos mummy had to iron us flat first so that we look tidy enough.." - don?t you just love them.....

WideWebWitch · 30/06/2005 09:43

I realised yesterday why I haven't had to consider ways of making laundry easier up until now: dp has done it all for most of the past 5 years (he took a photo once as I loaded the machine because it was such a rare sight) and dh did it for 3/4 years before that. Before that I was in my twenties and single so all my washing went to the launderette for a service wash or the dry cleaners. So I haven't actually done much laundry for the past ten years. How have I got saddled with it now fgs?!

WWW - I 'do' the washing but DP does the ironing (whilst watching football or top gear and generally with a beer close to hand...).

Didn't realise quuite how much he did, till last week when he was at work, I put up the ironing board, only for DD1 to say 'Is Daddy home now mum?'

DEFFO BRILL thread

I don't do ironing unless it is a special occaision

DH does it but his shirts are worn under jacket then white coat so no one sees them and DS school shirts are non iron ones from woolies.

But we did buy an iron a few weeks ago that apparently can iron while on coat hanger ie vertical steam

Have not tried it out yet though.

Love the connection with BJs

Hee hee, almost as funny as the 'wisted my twankle' thread. Once had to phone dh at work to ask where we keep the iron...

Ellbell · 30/06/2005 12:40

What's wrong with cutting out the whole folding, taking upstairs, hanging business by simply dressing one's child out of the laundry basket? Am I the only Bad Mother who does this?

Gameboy · 30/06/2005 12:46

urgh - surely this only works if you're talking about man-made fibre mixes such as polycotton...

Can't see it working for Boden darling, surely?

mandyc66 · 30/06/2005 13:38

have you tried those sock thing you can get from lakeland or I got some from morrisons...wonderful. And whilst on the cleaning thing everyone MUST buy a magic eraser from JML!!!!!!

WideWebWitch · 30/06/2005 14:55

Oi gameboy, I can assure you we're not all dressed in polyester! Most of the shirts/dresses are cotton, a couple of linen things (don't iron those either, what's the point?)

dizzydo · 30/06/2005 15:20

Polly2 I dream of being like you but sadly that's as far as it gets.

polly2 · 30/06/2005 15:23

oh don't dream of being me. i am completely stupid wasting my time on clothes!! life is too short!! i wish i could put up with mess, and play more with my kids.

mandyc66 · 30/06/2005 17:40

I would like to be somewhere inbetween you and me Polly. I dream of my house being tidy all the time, but there always seems to be something better to do!!!!

I dont do ironing and was paid a great compliment from a friend the other day " you know what ive learnt from you" I waited with baited breath, "how to dry damp socks in the microwave"

spidermama · 30/06/2005 19:23

My MIL gave me great tip which is half way between ironing and not ironing in terms of appearance of clothes. When you take them out of the washing machine, fold the clothes really well in a pile and leave them for an hour or two (or overnight if it gets out of hand!). Then when you hang them to dry they look much less crumpled. The ones at the bottom of the pile almost look ironed. Try it.

polly2 · 30/06/2005 19:43

having kids has eaten our brains. were we this interested in ironing b4 we had them. i suppose the fact is that we have much more laundry than sex, so we've forgotten wots exciting!!!

spidermama · 30/06/2005 20:09

That's the sad truth Polly2. I've worked out that I wash, hang up, dry and put away 84 socks every week. It's certainly not rocket science, but I need all the laundry tips and support I can get.

Magscat · 30/06/2005 20:13

I got out the ironing board the other day & I knew it had been a while but was a bit shocked when nearly 4 year old son said 'What's that Mummy? What does it do?'

spidermama · 30/06/2005 20:17

Know the feeling. I actually had to brush cobwebs off mine. (blush)
