I think i have done the right thing so why am i panicking about it!!

Hi, This is a bit random but im not sure where to post it!

Twice now we have had someone come to our door asking about who lives next door to us. The first person was from a water company showed me his ID etc and someone else has just been, not sure where she was from..they are asking if anyone lives next door and do i know who they are. The water guy mentioned the name of the tenant who lived there ages ago, 2 other families have been there since! They both said the property is down as empty but since we have lived next door (3 years) there have been 3 families.

So what is going on?! How can people be living there without paying for water/elec? I didn't give the people who came any info as i don't know any of the neighbours! Just confirmed that a family does live there. Now im worrying that ive "grassed them up" or something..we live in a bit of a rough area tbh and while we keep ourselves to ourselves it is fine here.

What do you think about this? I couldn't reallly lie and say no-one lives there could i! And i wouldn't do that anyway seeing as we work hard to pay for what we have, why should others get away with it!

I really wouldn't worry too much about this. If people ask you something, unless you have something to hide (or something to fear from the current neighbours?) why would you be worried about answering?

My Uncle used to work with debt collection agencies and 90 times out of 100 the records the company chasing the debt had would be out of date. i.e. the water company may be chasing "Mr. X" for an unpaid bill and will then go around checking all the registered addresses for that name.

I like to think I'm mostly above board but recently found my mobile phone company have my old address - from two moves ago! Some records are just not up to date.

As for the current tennants it's more than possible they're living there whilst paying bills to another company. They could well be not paying too - or be perfectly legit (how often have you heard about utility companies getting it 100% right? Very rare).

I wouldn't worry.

You make perfect sense. I dont know why im worrying, maybe being 38 weeks pregnant and a tad hormonal is something to do with it!

When the first guy came and asked, there was a different family next door. Shortly after his visit they upped and left during the night!! So just seems odd to me. Ah well. Thanks again for replying!
