Do you invent an email address? or do you give your real one? I have given one with my name: is that the done thing? Do sellers see it? I'm not planning to sell anything or do the dirty on anyone but I've just had an email about an item and it didn't have the person's name so some people must make them up. What's the done thing? Am I being dumb?

No you use your existing email address and paypal account. Buyers/sellers only see your username so no need to worry about people getting your info. I have used ebay for a few years now and have only ever had 1 problem so it is all above board and safe. The only reason they will get your details is if (of course) you buy something and then they have your name and postal address. Hope this helps

Thank you it does, very much. Do I have to have a paypal account then? I don't.

Yes, even if you do not use it to pay out or accept payments they still require you have one as that is the most popular method. It is quite a pain setting one up as they do a few security deposits for a few pence and you have to let them know how much they deposited ect but the site explains quite well how to do this. Or you could use a close friend or relatives account if they would be comfortable with you doing that. Once you have it all set up though its very easy to use and maintain and you can link your existing bankcards to your paypal and pay for items that way or you can pay using good old fashioned cheque or postal order if seller allows. Good luck x
