Why is my Chevrolet Matiz beeping at me?

I have a hire car ATM

It is a Matiz

Thursday I noticed that there was a quietish beep. One beep every 10-20secs. Kind of like a smoke detector with dodgy batteries but nowehere near as loud.

Thought it was because i did't have my seatbelt on (was on petrol forecourt) and forgot about it.

Today it was beeping again. It doesn't appear to be at completely regular intervals though. This time I have my seatbelt on. There are no warning lights on the dash.

I kind of feel that it is trying to tell me something non-urgent but I have no idea what.

Mine (not a Chev Matiz) beeps when the indicator is on, but the ignition is off - could it be that?

ThisBoyDraculaDrew · 05/12/2009 20:30

Nope.

I was driving at 60mph at one point - ignotion most defineately on!

I did wonder if it was a discreet way to tell me I was speeding...but sadly it doesn't seem capable of reachiong 70mph...let alone more

oooh ooh, do you have something heavy on one of the seats? Something that weighs enough that the car thinks it's a child? My dad's car used to beep if my backpack was on the seat, so I had to belt it in.

Or a fuse could have gone funny...I had a car once where the seat belt dinger went off constantly for hours until I took it somewhere and they pulled the fuse out.

JackTheHallsWithBauersOfHolly · 05/12/2009 20:36

Is it haunted?

ThisBoyDraculaDrew · 05/12/2009 20:37

I have car seats on the chairs.

One of them is strapped in anyway. The other two are booster seats so not strapped in. But there is a seatbelt warning on the dash and that isn't illuminated - unless it only illumiates for the front seat.

Jack - you may joke...but we used to have a Daewoo Nexia which used to lock us in!

As it's a rental, have they got the user manual in it? I can't think of anything, so I'd be checking the index of the manual for things that make it go beep and then eliminating those.

My old car had serious electrical issues. Along with the seat belt dinger, it had intermittent power door locks and power windows. So half the time you couldn't get out or in, and windows would roll down but not roll back up.

ThisBoyDraculaDrew · 06/12/2009 07:44

Yes I have the manual...beeping is not in the index so I have to read the whole thing. I just wondered whether google/MN could save me the pain of reading the whole thing!

Considering my insurance company have paid for a ford Ka but they have given me a 5 door Matiz I am reluctant to take it back to rental in case they give m something smaller (I have 3 kids so 5 doors is handy).

how about under 'warnings' or something like that? I tried googling too but didn't find anything.

ThisBoyDraculaDrew · 06/12/2009 21:10

nope

I have tried google too. Best I came up with was a stereo incompatability...

Our peugeot 807 did this for months (when under warranty). Finally discovered it was to do with the electrical seat contols, which move the seats and backward etc, so it beeped when you hit a bump in the road.

I still haven't forgiven the guy i the garage who asked if i had done my seatbelt up........

ThisBoyDraculaDrew · 07/12/2009 16:58

This is getting curiouser and curiouser.

It seems to beep when I am South of my house and not when I am North of my house

May be related to reception for the radio station which I am tuned into...

OP posts:
YanknChristmasCrackers · 07/12/2009 19:35

Does it have one of those traffic report things on it? Maybe beeping to alert you that there's a traffic report coming on? Ours has this 'feature' where it turns to the nearest station with a traffic alert and turns the volume up.

ThisBoyDraculaDrew · 07/12/2009 20:45

Yeah I think so....RDS...but it isn't changing the channel - just beeping at me!

this is intriguing though seems like there is a beeping problem with Blaupunkt radio's....and that nobody knows what to do about it....so I think I know what it is just not how to fix it!

EUREKA

"Warning beep
If you leave the reception area of the traffic
programme station currently tuned into, you
will hear a warning beep after approximately
30 seconds.
This alarm tone will also be released when
pressing a preset button which has no traffic
programme allocated to it."

Tis the radio not the car!

Yay!!!!!!!!

Now is there any way to get it to STOP doing that? Or is it good enough that you now know what it is and don't keep thinking something is wrong with the car?

ThisBoyDraculaDrew · 07/12/2009 22:35

Well it is kind of good enough that I know that it is not an indication that the car is about to explode!

I think I just have to turn off the RDS/TA...which I shall investigate tomorrow...hopefully I shall have my own car back by the end of the week

I have a Matiz but it doesn't beep at me. Is it some kind of security feature being a hire car? I'm expecting my first arrival in a few months and am struggling to fins a pushchair to fit in the back of the Matiz..any suggestions? x
