Anyone doing this year's Race for Life? If so, how is your training going..............Any tips?

Aggg I promised I wouldn't get involved in any more RFL threads but I still slip..
Yes, there are others of us doing it, in fact Breeze has already done hers.

There's more here

When is your Race ?

The most important thing is just to enjoy it, it's a fairly emotional experience IMO.
Raise as much sponsorship as you can persuade your family & friends to stump up and promise yourself you will be faster next year !

Sorry, probably came over as a bit rude - it's just that I've been trying to convince people to do it (especially the reformed smokers !) and they all wish I would shut up and go away !

Have you already done any training ? If yes, how are you getting on ?

B**gger can't believe I still double post !

Hi MimsMum. I've already done mine ( and I'm a reformed smoker too !). This year was the first time I've done it and I'll definitely be doing it again next year. Twink, you're right, it was an emotional experience and definitely one that bears repeating. I thought the training schedule was excellent and I now feel fitter ( at the age of 40) than I ever have in my life. Keep at it MimsMum. When is your race BTW?

berries · 05/06/2003 09:40

help - mine's next week and I still can't run continuously for more than 10 mins. Did do 4k the other day in 32 mins, so I'm hoping to do the 5 in about 45 - not quick, but faster than walking. What do most people do?

Twink · 05/06/2003 12:43

Berries, don't worry - if you can't do more than 10 mins try doing 9 then walking until you feel as if you've got your breath back then run again.

It's better to stop running before you feel completely wrecked. Remember doing 'Scout's pace' as a kid ? We used to run 6 paces then walk 6 when we were Brownies and it's the same sort of principle.

On the day you'll almost certainly surprise yourself at what you achieve, particularly if you find someone else doing a similar pace and stick with them. You'll find you keep each other going during the tough bits.

Try to pace yourself at the start and don't get carried away. I was once advised to try for a 'negative split' (runner's jargon !) basically do the second half of a race faster than the first because it stops you burning out. It's worked for me in all my races since last year's RFL, even in a very long one.

Good luck, let us know what time it starts and I'll think positive thoughts for you !

On my race, I ran till I got round the corner, and ran across the finish line and walked fast and jogged occasionally in between and I was no where near the end. A lot of people take it easy.

Good luck to all that have races coming up

MimsMum · 05/06/2003 20:38

Sorry - asked a question, then b***d off for a day!! My race is July 6th, and I am doing OK, but am worried as I seem able to run 5k at gym on treadmill, but outside seems so much harder. Am running with 2 friends, and we can't decide if to run together for encouragement, or if to run at our own paces. Am running for my dh who had cancer 4 years ago. Is fully recovered and a daddy now, thanks to the miracle of sperm freezing.

On the day it will be soooo much easier, really ! Try and do a few short runs outside if you can, ideally on the type of surface your race will be on.
Before my RFL last year I did almost all my training on a treadmill but now I'm used to being outside I find it so hard to motivate myself to stick at it - the stop button is too inviting..

Mine is the 6th too and I'm racing with a friend I met during last year's race - we keep each other going when we get tired.
Do your friends run at similar paces to you ? If not, your probably better to latch on to strangers going at your speed rather than trying to go faster/slower than you want to. Just meet up for a drink or three after.

berries · 06/06/2003 13:05

Thanks for that, Twink. Race starts at 7 on the 11th, so at least will have finished by 8! Did another run yesterday, but seem to be getting slower. I will try your tip about doing the second half faster than the first. I think I may be starting out too fast, and that is part of the problem. Also, the first half of the run is a long slow, but not very steep, hill, so I'm hoping the actual day may be a bit more level.
Good luck to everyone else whose going.

Twink · 08/06/2003 18:36

Good luck for Wednesday Berries, let us know how you get on !

Try to make a concious effort to start more slowly than usual so you don't put all your energy into the first 1000m. Ignore what everyone else is doing and don't worry about being last, you won't be

Twink · 12/06/2003 07:57

How did it go Berries ?

berries · 12/06/2003 08:36

39 minutes! Was fantastic atmosphere, with about 2500 people running/walking. I managed to run for large sections, with fast walking when my breath failed, so was really pleased with myself. Looks like I've raised about £200 as well (this is where working pays off - you can get everyone at work to sponsor you). Anyway, girls I was with ran in 25 & 29 minutes, but they've been running for ages so didn't think mine was too bad. BTW last 500m of the run was a Bl*y great hill, nearly killed me! Thanks for all your support, and it was a very emotional experience - may even do it next year!

Twink · 12/06/2003 08:56

Well done ! You deserve to be really chuffed, hope you're going to celebrate properly at the weekend !
