Maybe it should be This instead!

Furball, That is totally freaky. Are we all so predictable that we chose the same sequence of numbers?

breeze · 03/06/2003 15:05

Furball, I will you, totally freaking me out, got really excited whwn it was wrong, only to find out that I had added wrong and it was right.

breeze · 03/06/2003 15:06

Only way I found it not to work is by doing the same number twice.

Dahlia · 03/06/2003 15:07

Clever. How do they come up with these things?

Claireandrich · 03/06/2003 15:08

How cool! I tried it with several numbers and it worked each time!

meanmum · 03/06/2003 15:12

Wouldn't work for me.

EJsMum · 03/06/2003 15:13

Me neither, I tried it with 32. Tried it again with the same number and it still go it wrong. Not so amazing after all....

EJsMum · 03/06/2003 15:14

55 didn't work either.

Meid · 03/06/2003 15:15

Okay, I feel odd saying this but it worked with me.... but only when I concentrated on the ball! Please - someone explain!

mammya · 03/06/2003 15:17

Seriously weird...

Tinker · 03/06/2003 15:17

worked three times - bizarre!

EJsMum · 03/06/2003 15:20

Pot luck

tinyfeet · 03/06/2003 15:42

They all come out with the same symbol - no matter what numbers you try - it's always the same. There is a mathematical explanation, I'm sure. If you try a bunch of different numbers, you'll understand what I'm saying.

EJsMum · 03/06/2003 15:45

I tried that tinyfeet but it just cam out with complete nonsense. It's purely a law of probabilities thing

EJsMum · 03/06/2003 15:46

Sorry, should have been 'CAME'

musica · 03/06/2003 15:47

dh has explained it to me. If you do the example, you end up with 18. If you look at the symbol beside 18, then click the ball, that symbol appears. Then, look at 18 again, and the symbol beside it is different. The answer is not always 18 - e.g. try 79. 7+9=16. 79-16=63. Look at 63 - it has the same symbol as 18. So there are only a few possible answers, and they all have the same symbol on the chart, but this changes on each 'go'.

musica · 03/06/2003 15:48

Sorry, meant to add, try a few numbers, without clicking the ball, and just see what symbol ought to come up - they will all be the same, and then if you click, HEY PRESTO!

prufrock · 03/06/2003 16:06

It does work every time - heres the science (don't read on if you want to be amazed)

For any integer ab, ab - (a+b) = 9a. So for any two digit number you choose the result will always be divisible by 9. And all the numbers divisible by 9 (18, 27 etc) have the same symbol.

For those of you for whom it didn't work - I think you're adding up wrong

janh · 03/06/2003 18:07

I find the 9 thing weird in itself though, prufrock - the 09,18,27,36,45,54,63,72,81,90 pattern and the fact that all those sums in the thing always come out to a multiple of 9...maybe the number of the beast (?) was supposed to be 999 but someone turned it over!

EJsMum · 03/06/2003 19:18

With all due respect Prufock I don't think I am quite blonde enough to miscalculate 3 + 2 (my number was 32) and then take away my answer !!!

Tinker · 03/06/2003 19:24

prufrock - just tried it again - 2 out of 3 wrong!

doormat · 03/06/2003 19:27

i mtried 87, 15 and 10 and the crystal ball only got one symbol right. Huh!!!!!!

Khara · 03/06/2003 21:41

It worked for me three times in a row. I called in dh (who's a bit of a mathematician) and he immediately came up with an equation like Prufrock's. Your answer will always be divisible by 9 and all of those numbers have the same symbol as each other.

He said that if it didn't work, you can't be doing your sums right! Don't shout at me - he said it. (Frankly, I'm amazed it worked for me, my maths is crap!)

musica · 03/06/2003 21:43

The way to prove it's a fix is to try lots of different numbers, but don't click the ball - you'll find that all the numbers you come up with have the same symbol. If you click the ball, it's harder to check, because the symbol changes each time.
