hi all
like to say this is not a shoot me down in flames thread and dont want it to be.
i am just very interested.
i know a couple with a young baby, who are claiming every benefit they can, and they both work for cash in hand.
they have the latest mobile phones and the guys trainers cost more than my whole outfit.
it is really starting to p**s me off. my hubby works really hard and every month we are scraping the bucket at the end of the month.
why should we be the honest ones who are skint and they get everything.
so has anyone reported someone. did you feel guilty.
thanks for any replies

Rickman we once had 26k equity from out old property. we were on benefits at the time, and i still had to prove to them afterwards (4months later when i applied for IS) what had happened to the money. we paid mosat of it clearing debts, and the rest of purchases which we wanted/needed (new sofa, set of decks for dh and deck stand). at the time i didnt think we'd need to be on benefits.

so if you do need a new car/dishwasher/washing machine etc then i think as long as you can prove to the DSS where it has gone then u may be ok. but best check 1st.

How am I bugging the crap out of you? I couldn't care less! It's not the council you need to worry about, it's the Inland Revenue, especially if you're getting WTC or CTC. Or DSS.

It's pretty black and white to me - anyone who doesn't fully and truthfully report their situation falsifies their application and is a benefits cheat. There's even a declaration at the end of all of them, just before you sign and date.

rickman ignore. i kow all about your probs with ex-h, try not to get too stressed. after the year u had, take it easy.

FFS, Rickman. I answered that I reported someone who cheated and don't feel guilty for reporting cheats. Not meant to be a personal vendetta against you. It doesn't 'make me feel better'. Get a grip! I've been homeless myself more than once.

A person who falsifies their application is a cheat in the eyes of the law, whoever they may be.

If it doesn't apply to you, so be it.

Hope you've gotten the courts involved, rickman. Cuz that's just ridiculous that a person could be so cold as to see his own kids and their mum out on the streets. And make sure the CSA has his contact details as well.

Nightynight · 21/06/2005 17:24

rickman, just look for all the legal things you can do with your equity so as not to fall foul of the benefit system, and dont feel guilty!!

To update: firstly I havent been claiming ctc or any type of benefit yet. I spent some time yesterday speaking ot IR who were surpriseingly very helpful. They suggested also contacting my local DSS office and going through anyother entitlements. They seemed to thing that my student bursary will also take into account my situation. Have also had some very long coversations with dp who has explained that he is willing to help if he can. He just doesnt want ot make promises he might not be able to keep. Originally he wants my rent to increase to take into account my ds but he has changed regarding this. I am giving him this time/chance because when we got together the situation wasnt as it now is. Also i dont know if he is the one etc and i have a tendency to be extrmely independent and never really questioned what he was saying as too proud.

I am certainly not a benefits cheat and this whole dilemma has been completely stressing me out. Although I will say that at the end of the day it isnt always clear right and wrong and each case is individual.

Rickman - i really do sympathise with diff sit you are in.

Kelly1978 · 23/06/2005 12:49

your not-so-dp wanted to increase the rent? Please, can't you go to the council and see about some alternative accomodation for yourself? It sounds liek you ae in a terrible situation adn shouldn't be worrying about benefit fraud at all - u need a place of your own.
