i was just on the RNW website, and they have some fab ideas for raising awareness of using cloth...

is anyone doing anything?

i think it would be better if all councils offered interest free loans to set you up and you paid it back at the rate of the cost of a packet of disposables a week. that would help people to start

pootlepod · 18/06/2005 23:02

But going back to the title I will be making sure LO wears a t-shirt and nappy all week, hanging my nappies out on the line with pride, grrring at all the disp. adverts on telly telling me that they will help my baby sleep better, hanging my bear behinds car hanging thing off the pram, swinging my nappy keyring at everyone and going to a few nappuchinos.

The only thing I'm slightly concerned about is fitting in Wimbledon.

jessicasmummy · 18/06/2005 23:04

JUst looked at my council website, and i can get a starter pack from them for a fiver!

Includes the following -

3 white shaped style nappies (no folding required!),
2 waterproof covers,
1 booster pad (for extra absorbency at night),
Paper liners,
Instructions,
Information booklet containing a £10 voucher.

Not bad huh?!

misdee · 18/06/2005 23:12

excellant jess. get one!

jessicasmummy · 18/06/2005 23:18

i think i will!

starlover · 19/06/2005 09:31

yeah but they DON'T have to be expensive.

when DS was small I used terry squares. they were something like £12 for 8. I still use them for back up...
One of the things our council produced actually showed you could have enough stuff for birth to potty for £50 by using terry squares.

So, it only gets expensive if you want to use shaped nappies, or stuffies or whatever.

And contrary to popular belief terry squares are NOT difficult to fold! lol

jessicasmummy · 19/06/2005 09:33

mum bought me the whole set for using terry squares but they were just too big for jess - they came up to her armpits! by the time she was big enough i had already bought the kushies... i will getm y £5 pack from the council...

starlover · 19/06/2005 09:39

ahh.. but you can do some clever folds to make them small enough!

i got on really well with them, i have to say

OP posts:
jessicasmummy · 19/06/2005 09:40

maybe im just not up to the folding thing - mum sadly died 2 weeks after jess was born and my dad didnt have a clue about folding nappies and i hadnt discovered MN by then either!!!

Jess is in a kushies and t-shirt today and thats it bless her - she looks so cute with her big bum!

starlover · 19/06/2005 09:42

aww bless.. when i had DS in disposables when we went away it was SO weird not having a huuuuuge bum!

OP posts:
starlover · 19/06/2005 09:42

i did find out about clever folding styles from MN! so that must be it! lol

OP posts:
jessicasmummy · 19/06/2005 09:43

i love big bums! might even take a pic later when she wakes up!!

jambo1707 · 19/06/2005 09:46

Having twins disposables are well easier for me

jessicasmummy · 19/06/2005 09:47

nah, i hope jess is still in re-usables when the new baby is born - and i intend to take re-usables to hospital this time (maybe with a back up pack of disposables just in case!)

starlover · 19/06/2005 09:50

jm... our hospital provides cottom bottoms for people who want to try them out while in there... worth seeing if your hospital does anything like that.

only prob with taking your own is that if by chance you are kept in longer than expected you either hae a huge pile of yucky nappies to take home with you, or you have to trust DP/DH to wash them!

OP posts:
jessicasmummy · 19/06/2005 10:02

i intend to only be there 6 hours, but dh is very good at washing.... will definately look into whether the hospital do anything.... thanks for the tip!

starlover · 19/06/2005 21:49

i only intended to be in overnight... but got stuck there because of DS not feeding (amongst other things!)

OP posts:
jessicasmummy · 19/06/2005 21:50

ill discharge myself if i have to!

i was in for about 12 hours after jess was born and that was only because it was a saturday and the docs decided to take FOREVER in doing the rounds!!!

misdee · 19/06/2005 21:51

i changed hopspitals at the last minute and didnt get time to book their cloth nappies (they lend them to you for about £5 per week i think it was, and collect and wash them, giving you fresh ones). wish i booked into that hospital earlier.

jessicasmummy · 19/06/2005 21:52

not sure what my hospital do.... might have to ask mw when i next see her

jessicasmummy · 19/06/2005 21:54

ive had a few replies to my wanted thread.... even if one person does want to sell me 3 tots for £20 - thought that was a bit steep as i can get them brand new for £23.25!

starlover · 19/06/2005 22:29

lol yeah! that seems a bit steep!
i didn't find out about the cloth nappies at our hospital untikl i went for a tour of the maternity unit.
that was when i was 40 weeks! lol

OP posts:
jessicasmummy · 19/06/2005 22:31

cant find anything online about nappies and hospital so not sure.

Dh loves the look of tots bots so might have to invest in a couple at the end of the month - funnily enough he quite likes the cute pink one, but as i said, if it does the job, i want to use it for number 2 and if number 2 is a boy - things could get funny!

starlover · 19/06/2005 22:33

lol yeah! you;ll have to stick to unisex colours!

OP posts:
jessicasmummy · 19/06/2005 22:34

fingers crossed i can find something to keep jess dry at night!!!
