My DS has been invited to a friend's barmitzvah celebration and is going to the synagogue and the (swanky London) party the follwing day. What should he bring as a present? Does it have to be money and if so roughly how much? The friend is a good friend who he has known for about 8 yrs.I'm afraid I haven't got a clue so any advice would be welcome.

Treat it like a birthday present. It doesn't have to be money. It could be something he'll have forever such as a nice pen set - but I doubt a 13 yr old boy would really want one of those, so I would look at spending approx £20 on something nice. Books are always good, particularly if he he has a specific interest.

I'm with my chocolate cousin. For Barmitvah's I spend about £20 as it's a really special occasion. It's about the only time I set a higher budget (of course if I can get the same thing cheaper, then it goes without saying)

I wouldn't give money but we would spend (and have) £50-£100, especially for a swanky London one. Mind you, that's been for friends of OURS and when WE have been invited.
