A few facts about the Conservative Party that you should know if you are being persuaded by their talk of change.

David Cameron was born in London, his father was a stockbroker and his mother the daughter of Sir William Mount. His ancestors from his father?s side hail from bankers and stockbrokers, it?s how they made their fortune. Cameron went to Eton and then Oxford where he was a member of the notorious Bullingdon Club. He has stated publicly that he is a huge fan of Thatcher. Unsurprisingly he voted against the hunting ban, being a hunter himself. He has been criticised by his own party members for being too Etonian and out of touch with reality.

In 1989 Cameron accepted an invite to South Africa paid for by an anti-sanctions lobby. This was whilst Nelson Mandela was still in prison. He was quoted as describing the trip thus: ?it was all terribly relaxed, just a little treat, a perk of the job.?

Cameron?s wife Samantha is the daughter of Sir Reginald Adrian Berkeley Sheffield and the Viscountess Astor. Their combined wealth is estimated at £30m plus.

George Osborne is the eldest son and heir of Sir Peter Osborne and was originally named Gideon. He was educated at Oxford and he too was a member of the Bullingdon Club. He has two children who are privately educated.

He was caught up in the expenses row after he ?flipped? his second home in order to pay less tax, the Lib Dems reckoned he got away with £55,000 by doing this. He also claimed for a mortgage that was paid, chauffeur fares and two copies of a DVD of his own speech on, of all topics, ?value for taxpayers money?. He subsequently paid it back.

He also tried to solicit a £50,000 donation from a Russian multi-billionaire back in 2008.

So there are 3 members of Oxford?s Bullingdon Club in the Tory Party right now, all from the same year. Isn?t that nice for them? A club that was noted for it?s drunken antics, willful destruction of restaurants (run by working class people), bars and windows and it?s arrogance in the face of the law.

Of the Tory Party itself, there are currently 17 Conservative women MPs compared to 95 in the Labour Party.
Of the occupations of MPs, in the 2005 general election there were 35 manual workers in the Labour Party compared to 2 in Conservative. Labour had 32 school teachers, Tories had 6.
In the same election there were 13 non-white Labour MPs and just 2 Conservative MPs.
Of those going to fee-paying schools, in 2005 118 Tory MPs came from fee-paying schools compared to 63 Labour MPs. 43% of Tory MPs were Oxbridge education compared to 16% of Labour.

So whenever anyone tries to tell you that the Conservatives do live in the real world and are all for making ordinary peoples lives better, quote these figures at them.

Me, I might vote Lib Dems.

Custardo - yes, I think of the Tory party in that way

But I guess historically poor working people had a Party that 'belonged' to them... Old Labour. It represented them and their needs

But over the last decade or so that's been massively diluted, to the point where I feel New Labour doesn't 'speak' to traditional Labour voting people

Who do the 'poor' vote for now?

Tortington · 09/10/2009 20:26

i'm with you NNB, i dunno who the traditional working class vote for now, i really don't.

notnowbernard · 09/10/2009 20:29

Well, if you're one of my nobhead cousins you vote for the BNP

Thanks, Tony. Nice legacy

Tortington · 09/10/2009 20:40

yeah i know a couple of people like that too - in fact the town where i originally came from everyone seems racist. sad indictment of parenting and education

notnowbernard · 09/10/2009 20:43

I felt very flat when I found it out from my Mum (via my Aunt)

Utterly depressing

Tortington · 09/10/2009 20:49

i often wonder why i am different - why i don;t think about the people who they say are 'invading' taking ut jobs and all that shit

and why i think that its govy policy that means that people can migrate or not.

i haven't got any particular knowledge than any other common as muck person with regards to politics

Tortington · 09/10/2009 20:49

the amt of times ive has pissed up arguments in the pub - nearly got my face done in is unbelievable - i love a good pissed up argument.

hatwoman · 09/10/2009 20:58

afaik Osborne and Cameron weren't in the BC at the same time - there's 6 years between them in age.

now the chances of me voting tory are pretty slim (understatement of the year) but I'll be voting on policies.

ABetaDad · 09/10/2009 21:11

I declare myself genuinely astonished that people cannot see beyond the fact that DC went to Eton and his Dad was a stockbroker.

None of you thought Tony Blair was unfit for office because he went to Fettes and his Dad was a law lecturer.

Would any of you think to that say someone from a sink estate was unfit for office just because they went to a Comprehensive school and their Dad was on benefits his whole life?

Thought not.

notnowbernard · 09/10/2009 21:12

Feel I should also make the point that I reject the Conservative Party on the basis of their policies and general ideologies, not simply because of the socio-economic backgrounds of the majority of their MPs

wicked · 09/10/2009 21:14

I think an Eton and Oxford education are both plus points.

It shows that they are clever and well-educated. Those are both good things to look for in leaders of the country.

Tortington · 09/10/2009 21:18

abetadad - i dont think anyone has said sucha thing openly - it would be MN suicide to do so.

i declare myself truly astonished that people cannot see that the point was not about their background but as has been previously stated - by policywonk respected policical MN person that this leads in DCs case to a lack of knowledge of anything outside of his small small world. nly she said it better than that.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 09/10/2009 21:24

What scares me is that there is this breed of politician that is a career politician. Uni, some sort of research job/party activist, and then helicoptered into some safe seat without any life experience.

wicked · 09/10/2009 21:28

How much knowledge does anyone have outside of their own realm?

DC is not the same Eton schoolboy or Oxford Undergraduate. He has had a couple of decades of life experience since then. And he has a whole team working with him, all of whom bring something to the table.

I don't get how growing up on benefits is a superior leadership skill to someone who went to Eton. I really, really don't get it at all.

ABetaDad · 09/10/2009 21:44

DC worked for Carlton TV for 7 years between 1994 and 2001 as Director of Corporate Affairs. I have it on good authority that he did an incredibly tough job extremely well.

He has an experience beyond Parliament at a high level in the business world and yes wicked is spot on about the team around him also briging experience to the table.

As ever I totally disagree with Policywonk that he or his team is narrow in experience.

Tortington · 09/10/2009 21:45

but he eats kittens?! i really don;t know how you can substantiate your argument abd - he eats KITTENS

policywonk · 09/10/2009 21:49

I've heard that he nails otters to Crazy Coupe cars and pushes them down hills. But strictly within the M40 corridor.

saintlydamemrsturnip · 09/10/2009 21:52

I went to Oxford from a state school. I didn't automatically dislike old etonians because they went to eton. That's just daft.
I have no idea how I'll vote yet, but it will be based on policies not background.
The economy is absolutely fucked anyway, so whoever gets in will be cutting spending.

SomeGuy · 09/10/2009 21:55

Live ones too. It was a Bullingdon initiation rite. They had to be live, pure-bred Bengal kittens.

wicked · 09/10/2009 21:56

I also don't get the view that the Tories will mess up the economy.

In my living memory, Labour actually bankrupted us (we cap in had to the IMF), went out with a whimper during the Winter of Discontent, and there is now (end to Boom and Bust, eh?).

In contrast, the last Tory govt left the enconomy buoyant.

The Labour Party bleats on about international bankers, but they forget that their tenure always ends like this. It is their destiny.

ABetaDad · 09/10/2009 22:00

....followed no doubt by Eton Mess and all washed down with a finest Bollinger.

Honestly. I am shocked by the level of political debate on MN.

wicked · 09/10/2009 22:04

Has Boris sat in the pavlova again?

Tortington · 09/10/2009 22:05

you had me at " he nails otters"

SomeGuy · 09/10/2009 22:15

Otterly ridiculous IMO - they stick to felines.

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 09/10/2009 22:18

Um, what's the problem with studying at Oxford and being a member of the Bullingdon club?!?!?
