I knew that I would not be able to record things anymore but I cannot even watch videos or dvds since yesterday. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there anything that can be done or do I have to invest in new things ( do not really want to).

It may be the way your tv, digital box, dvd and video players are connected to each other. Double check the manuals before you think about replacing stuff.

It seems that the video recorder has crashed (not necessary linked to switch to digital) and indeed, because the DVD was linked to the video it was not working anymore. Thanks Pyrocantus, it has now all been rearranged by DH!

Oh, well done, at least you don't need to get a new DVD player.

Nope And I am pretty certain that DH will find a way to "operate" on the video recorder and restore it to its old self![hopefull emoticon]

With a cheapish Freeview box you could probably get a SCART connection to go into the VCR to be able to record. Don't know if there are any FV boxes with two tuners (the ones which have hard drives do, but if you pay for one of those, it's going to be the best option to use that to record programmes off-air).

Have seen some units which will record to DVD, intended to record from incoming signals (satellite or FV) so you might want to consider starting to transfer any video collection onto DVD now, before you really cannot get spares/second hand VCRs. It's a long time since I've seen them being widely sold (is it 2 or 4 years since Dixons/Currys stopped selling them?) Only units I have seen of late are combinations (perhaps to enable copy to DVD).

In essence, if the VCR output can be fed into something with hard drive or DVD writing ability, there's some chance of archiving any family videos or other off-air recordings, and possibly a chance for pre-recorded video tapes (though copy protection might mess up any recordings).
