Well, you might not be.

But I was.

Superdrug's Little Star brand of weaning spoons say suitable from 3 months!

I emailed them and they said they'd pass my comments on to their buyers - wtf?!

Appologies in advance as I haven't read the full thread but I imagine that if you want to wean a baby at 3m you don't require specialised weaning spoons, anyone may do, and even if it says that you can't use them until you are 18yrs old, people can still buy them and use them anyway...

Hulababy · 05/06/2005 20:33

My brother was spoonfed milk from birth, as his cleft palate/hare lip meant he couldn't suck. Although there are now alternatives, I know that it s still one alternative still available in such circumstances. Spoons are not just used for weaning.

Flossam · 05/06/2005 20:34

I think I feel so bad because I know what good work the WHO do and how useful their recommendations often are. I am very pro breastfeeding, one of the reasons I wanted to continue was because I was considering doing BF councelling, but I have not exclusively breast fed for x amount of months and wouldn't qualify. I know what I am reading is right, and yet couldn't quite make it. Having said that DS has been a dream to wean so far and has had no reactions to foods as yet.

paolosgirl · 05/06/2005 20:35

As a mother, and as someone who, through work, organises the information for new mothers, I can honestly say that there is never so much information given out than when you are pregant.
If the wording on a packet of spoons is really going to replace ALL the other information that we throw at new mothers, then I might as well save the thousands I spend each year from my budget, and do the NHS a favour.

Yup, every Sunday night.

How do I make Chicken Fried steak?

lavenderrrrr · 05/06/2005 20:35

maybe I wanted a proper discussion.......if you can't have one then it's not down to me

Gwenick · 05/06/2005 20:36

OK - read the rest of the thread

  1. WHY are people turning this into a 'holier than thou' thread, and 'well my baby/me/granny/' etc etc was fine being weaned earlier thread when in fact it 's nothing to do with that.

  2. I KNEW of the WHO guidelines 4.5yrs ago - but CHOSE not to follow them.

  3. Both my children were weaned at around 16 weeks (4 months). DS1 was breastfed, DS2 was bottlefed. As it so happens DS1 was a very sickly baby, DS2 hardly knows what a Dr.s surgery looks like (yet - he's only 18 months). SHOCK HORROR, DS1 had mainly jars until 1yr old with me sticking 'ridigly' to the 'MUST NOT EAT' and 'MUST EAT' lists. DS2 was weaned onto our food and by 6 months had LITERALLY everything we were having (except the glasses of wine with the meals).

That was MY choice, and I don't feel in the slightest bit guilty about it.

HOWEVER, modern MEDICAL research shows that weaning babies 'too' early IS bad for them - yes many of us are healthy happy adults and were weaned early (My brother is a strapping 6fter and had wheetabix in his bottle at 6 weeks old!). HOWEVER, we also KNOW that smoking is bad for us.............and some people go through life smoking and having NO health issues related to it (apart from black lungs) and live to a ripe old age.......that doesn't mean that smoking is 'OK' though - does it????

hercules · 05/06/2005 20:36

If I honestly believed you could discuss something without resorting to insults then maybe.

bobbybob · 05/06/2005 20:36

I'm afraid I do know somebody who would justify weaning at 3 months because it said it was okay on a packet of spoons "and they wouldn't be allowed to put that if it wasn't safe would they?"

She's younger than me, but by no means a teenager, and she does visit the HV (and completely ignores her). She just wants her babies to grow up fast and her ambition takes her in some strange directions.

Flossam · 05/06/2005 20:37

Hercules, sorry crossed posts, although that last post was kind of relevant really! Similar happened to me, my mum had a long and hard labour and my first food as a newborn was a bottle. I have alsorts of things, including anaphalixis, which is why I was so desperate to try and do right by DS. She feels guilty about what happened, but it was done without her permission.

Gwenick · 05/06/2005 20:37

Spoons are not just used for weaning.

True - but having tried (and failed) to get my DS1 to drink EBM from anything going I know that you can buy special spoons for giving milk to babies..........lets face it - how successfully can you put liquid on 'most' weaning spoons? Most of them are long and pretty flat!

lavenderrrrr · 05/06/2005 20:38

show me where i've insulted you here

colditz · 05/06/2005 20:38

Can anyone tell me how to make Chicken Fried Steak?

AnnieQ · 05/06/2005 20:38

Erm, don't want to seem like a fool here, but count the r's in Lavenderrrrr's name. I think this is a piss take at Lav's expense.

I was on that thread lastnight where you were full of them. I am choosy about who I'll talk to.

colditz · 05/06/2005 20:39

And if we ignore whoever is doing it, they will get bored and leave

hercules · 05/06/2005 20:40

You're right, colditz. Sorry.

snafu · 05/06/2005 20:40

not meaning to be bossy btw, just had to get in fast before all hell let loose!

paolosgirl · 05/06/2005 20:41

It's about the ever-changing goalposts, and the assumption that if you don't salvishly follow 'the guidelines' instead of your instincts, then you are in some way a bad, negligient parent.
