Does granite need treating ever?

Woman in magnet just told me that granite has to be sealed annually to stop vinegar / oils soaking into surface and ruining colour

is that true?? first I've heard of it??

First I have heard of it and I have had granite work surfaces for 5 years now.
I do use a special cleaner/polisher form Lakeland though every so often which gives it a beautiful finish!

Don't think so my dh is in the granite business & he said their the best worktops to have.I have a granite fireplace and wasn't told anything.

Some peopel say this and it means that Magnet are making more money. Bear in mind Magnet are HUGELY overpriced for everything and the quality is not that hot. For the money you would be better to go to a smaller independant locally who will not rip you off like they do

Also I got granite directly from the supplier to Magnet, and it was nearly half the price Magnet quoted (Whitehall Fabrications are the company)

They gave me a kit 2 1/2 years ago and I use it once every few months. It just really polishes it up beautifully. Also re seals it, but it is only like celaning with a normal cleaner except you wipe it off too.

we had a local granite company fit our kitchen worksurfaces and the only thing we were told was dont put hot saucepans etc directly on top of it in case there is a fault under the surface causing it to shatter, (my sil has an aga and uses a granite board to put her kettle on and that has never shattered), probably an idea not to cut on it, and for cleaning wipe over with warm soapy water wipe dry and then spray with pledge or similar to bring up the shine!

thanks - I wasn't planning on buying from magnet - agree they are totally overpriced (have ordered kitchen from homebase which fitter recommended as good quality)

do you have contact details for your granite people or know where they are based, do they template and fit too? would be interested in getting more quotes for the granite

we're in sussex, the company we used for our kitchen is GJC in Heathfield and for our bath surround we used Aldbourne Stone in West Grinstead.

I used Marble City near Wandsworth Bridge...were ok price wise, turned up on time etc, came back when we needed a bit of sealing doing around edges, even gave me a couple of huge slabs for pans etc after job was finished and paid for as an extra. Would recommend them.

albourne were great, we had a quote for from mole valley but they couldnt come when we needed them to , gjc did our slate kitchen floor and were the go between for lee bealing who actually templated and fitted.
