How fab are the Royal Ballet

We went to London last Friday, the excuse being that it was our wedding anniversary a few days previously, and took dd to see Frederick Ashton's Ondine at the ROH. It was so fab, the sets and costumes were very 1930's and it was totally ethereal.It was the first time I'd seen the Royal Ballet, although I have been many times to see various Russian troupes.

We came back to earth the next day though as we spent most of the day in the British Museum (can recommend the 3-D film about Egyptian mummies).

I wonder if mumsnet should have a thread topic called Art & Culture? I might ask HQ.

Oh yes thanks for reminding me Jools, I have seen the English National Ballet once - it was a matinee of the Nutcracker very much aimed at children, the one where Gerald Scarfe designed the costumes and sets.

I have asked HQ and they will discuss it in their meeting tomorrow, does anyone else want a thread so we can crap on about paintings, ballet, classical music etc?

I saw Ondine at the ROH 17 years ago when I was a student! It really was delicious, as you say very ethereal and I still think about those beaitiful watery costumes...Are you in Sussex Cam? Have you seen anything at the Festival yet?

I went to see Slyvie whatsername (how plebby am i?) and the Ballet Boyz at Sadlers Well's recently. The Ballet Boys were so moving I had tears in my eyes. I was so excited I came on her and had a lovely chat with a ballet fan at some ungodly hour.

yes cam - despite being a keen ballet dancer until about age 14 I had never actually been to the ballet before. My mum tried to take me to see Nureyev when I was about 8 but he injured himself backstage and it was cancelled. Anyway I was totally moved and enthralled by it and would like to go again

How wonderful would it have been to see Nureyev!
I started taking dd to the ballet a few years ago when she was 4, to see the classic fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty (St Petersburg troupe). First time I took her to the ROH was last summer to see the Bolshoi's Swan Lake, which was totally magical.
