I am considering getting my nose pierced, am I nuts and will I regret it?

I really fancy getting a tiny nose stud, something very dainty like this

Am I bonkers? Will it look awful? I really like the idea of it.

One thing that worries me is that if I don't like it or I get bored of it then it won't heal properly and I'll be left with a dot scar on my nose.

Also re practicalities, will my nose blow up huge and red for days or does it go down quite quickly, and will I have to faff ala ear piercings with antiseptic and twisting it round every night? Will it hurt lots and do they do it with a gun/stapler type thingy?

I see where you're coming from harleyd, but my ears (and nose) were pierced with studs which had quite a sharp point at the end of the shaft.
I've never fancied the needle because, ok it's sharp so would go through your ear/nose/whatever quite easily, but then you have to take it out again before you can put the stud in. With a gun, it's done in one very quick action.

MadreInglese · 22/06/2009 15:38

I don't get it

Tat is the crap that charity shops can't sell

IMHO you get a much better position with a needle because you aren't hampered by how far you can shove that repulsive gun up your nose

Plus the gun will (a) make a big hole which is more likely to scar if you change your mind just by virtue of the fact its bigger and (b) probably stick a butterfly on the back which can be uncomfortable

Go to the piercers and get it done. I took mine out two years ago and TBH you would never know it was there now

MadreInglese · 22/06/2009 15:40

ooh it's gone now

perhaps Justine was just sneezing on the thread

Is that the new recommended MN posting style? It sums up her feeling towards nose studs without getting dragged into a debate about it

Maybe those with nose studs are tat?

MadreInglese · 22/06/2009 15:42

I know they clean them but the thought of how many schnozzers it's been shoved up is putting me off the gun idea

Mine was done 15 years ago with a needle

You won't be able to have a "tiny stud" in for a few months though because the initial stud is quite large

It will probably look angry for a few weeks

Mine has never healed although I've gone for years without it in - that's quite nice though as I can now put a tiny stud in whenever I feel like it

shivermetimbers · 22/06/2009 15:45

That tiny stud is a bit too subtle imo. I like things a bit more 'in your face' (pardon the pun),if you dont notice it there doesn't seem much point to it. Or maybe i'm just an attention seeker.
If you want it, go for it. You only live once.

harleyd · 22/06/2009 15:49

mine was pierced and a tiny stud put in straight away
the other side had a ring put in straight away
i think if it was done with a gun it would be a normal sized ear stud?
also, if its done with a gun, do you have a straight stud thru it, or is it right angled so if you hit your nose its not gonna hurt you? iykwim?

MadreInglese · 22/06/2009 15:49

that's what worries me mp, don't really want to be wandering about like rudolph for ages

OP posts:
morningpaper · 22/06/2009 15:50

the rudolph effect is pretty common TBH

mine was quite swollen for about three weeks and developed a large red 'spot' near it - which apparently is normal

perhaps not a good luck on the school run

lynniep · 22/06/2009 15:54

I never had a rudolph nose lol! Nose never gave me any gip at all.

Hole is quite narrow though because I did it with a thin needle - wouldnt be able to push a standard piercing stud through it unless I really forced it, and I imagine then it would get a bit red.

I always used a straight stud meant for ears, and bend the end with pliers so it wouldnt slip out. Couldnt ever mangage those 'curly' ones.

MadreInglese · 22/06/2009 15:55

Subtle is what I want though, I'm not bold enough for anything more than a cowardly little stud

I think my first job is to check out the local piercing/tattoo studios to see what they can do, I think there are two

I second what...er...somebody said; a stud that's too small just looks like a spot from a distance, think you need to go a bit bigger than the one in the pic. IMO.

stroppyknickers · 22/06/2009 16:19

I had mine done recentlt in a piercing studio and it quickly became a big pita. Baby fascinated by it, it kept falling out, getting knocked out when i was getting dressed etc so in the end i gave up.

PinkTulips · 22/06/2009 16:20

they put the needle through with whatever stud or ring you want in the piercing attached to the end so it's just one swift motion and far less painful than the gun.

i had my nose done with a gun in a hairdressers and it felt like someone had smashed my face in with a hammer

all my needle piercings have been much more pleasant to get done.

am in awe of the diy belly piercing... i stick to diy ear piercings myself, although have repierced my nose a couple of times when it sealed over.

oliverboliverbutt · 22/06/2009 20:12

Honestly, google piercing guns.
EWWWW!
They cannot properly sterilize them. People at Claires are trained for like, oh, an hour on how to use them.

A professional piercer will be quick and precise and it would hurt a lot less.
And a gun will leave you with a BIG hole in your nose once it heals up because it takes the cartiledge straight out, where a needle pushes it gently to the side.
I DO NOT believe that ANY piercing/tattoo shop would use a gun.

4madboys · 22/06/2009 20:24

i have my nose, my lip and my tongue pierced.

the nose hurt most, because it was done with agun.

get it done with a needle at a professional ttatto studio, which is what i did for my tongue and lip, didnt hurt and no soreness or infection.

unlike when i got my nose done at some cheapy jewlery shop.

cocolepew · 22/06/2009 20:28

I had mine done about 8 years ago and it HURT I don't wear a ring anymore and I can't even see the hole.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 22/06/2009 20:32

Have not read it all but agree with the last 4madboys - do not get it done with a gun.

I have (well, they are both closed over now) my ears pierced 3 times in each ear, my nose pierced twice and my lip pierced twice.

My ears - with a gun - hurt like hell and got infected, the first time when I was 6, and then when I was 14 and got the other two done (told em I was 16, to my mothers later horror). Even now, when I wear earrings i get a crust build up, sometimes they become infected.

My nose - first time, a gun. Got infected. Often got infected if I took stud/ring out for a few days then put back in again.

My nose - second time - i pierced it myself with sterilised needle. It hurt not a jot , I did not even know I had been successful in my piercing until the needle hit the septum in the middle of my nose! And never got infected. I was able to wear a ring in it straight away and there is no scarring.

My lip - both times, with a needle. it did not hurt at all and healed really quickly. And I used tea tree oil as an antiseptic which was fab, as long as you are not allergic to it. No infections ever (well not related to the piercing, rather, biting really really hard into a piece of pizza and biting down on the back of the lambretta bar pulling it clean out .
