I am considering getting my nose pierced, am I nuts and will I regret it?

I really fancy getting a tiny nose stud, something very dainty like this

Am I bonkers? Will it look awful? I really like the idea of it.

One thing that worries me is that if I don't like it or I get bored of it then it won't heal properly and I'll be left with a dot scar on my nose.

Also re practicalities, will my nose blow up huge and red for days or does it go down quite quickly, and will I have to faff ala ear piercings with antiseptic and twisting it round every night? Will it hurt lots and do they do it with a gun/stapler type thingy?

I had mine done about 10 years ago so was a fully fledged adult at the time. I haven't got it in now as I tend to wear it for about 6 months, get bored and take it out, then miss it and put it back. There is a hole there still (although I have to re-pierce a bit every time) but you really can't see it amongst the blackheads amd wrinkles

They do it with a gun stapler thingy and it doesn't hurt. Having my ears done hurt more tbh.

That's what I had in my nose - I had it done about 10 years ago (took it out about 4 years ago just because I didn't want it anymore).
My nose was pierced with a gun using a "normal" earring which I had to leave in for 5 days, then replace with a proper nose stud. The earring came out no problem and the proper nose-stud was never a problem - the shaft on a nose stud is a lot finer than an earring.
No, there was no red swelling and I've never bothered with antiseptic even on my ears, just twist it round a couple of times over the 5 days while the hole settles.
Go for it

I've ummed and aahed for years and have decided I'm taking the plunge. DH is off on Weds so will go then. I want a small one like you linked to.

Join me. Gwan.

Sorry, but to my eyes they always just look like you have a hideous zit on your nose - even if a tiny diamond. Not a good look at all.

lynniep · 22/06/2009 15:07

just do it if you want

I did mine when I was 14 (gaaah - 20 - years ago!!)

Like eyeball, still have a hole there which is barely noticiable. it hasnt healed over so I could still put a stud in if I wanted, but I havent for a long time now.

I did it myself with a needle and brute force (not sure how, couldnt do that these days!) and I wouldnt recommend it - but I know (and was surprised) that it didnt hurt. Was just hard to get it through the back.
My ears on the other hand... hurt like hell and they were done with a gun.

12StoneNeedsToBe10 · 22/06/2009 15:08

Well I liked my "zit" PuppyMonkey

harleyd · 22/06/2009 15:08

saying this for the second time today...but do not^ get it done with a gun
omg, people getting ears done with a gun are bad enough...but not your nose! it can damage the cartilage
go to a piercing studio and have it done with a needle
it doesnt hurt, it doesnt swell much, it will only be red for a little while
ive had both sides of my nose pierced for about 16 years with no problems
clean it every few hours with cooled boiled salted water, it doesnt take long to heal

MadreInglese · 22/06/2009 15:09

ShowofHands I have ummed and ahhhed for aaaaaages too.....

oliverboliverbutt · 22/06/2009 15:10

If you do get it done, DON'T get it done with a gun!!!

Go to a proper piercing place and have it done with a needle. there will be less trauma to your nose, less chance of infection and the healing time will be much quicker.

lynniep · 22/06/2009 15:10

LOL madreinglese, no I couldnt do it myself either these days, but back then I was invincible

12StoneNeedsToBe10 · 22/06/2009 15:12

A couple of people have said don't get it done with a gun, go to a proper piercing studio etc.
Fair enough, I'm sure their comments are very valid, however I did get mine done at a proper piercing studio, and with a gun, and had no problems whatsoever.

ShowOfHands · 22/06/2009 15:12

I pierced my own belly button.

lynniep · 22/06/2009 15:14

oh by the way - I wasnt saying I dont recommend a needle ( because theres no way I'd let a gun near me snout) - I was saying I dont recommend you do it yourself .

I agree with the posters that say go do a piercing studio. Please dont head down to Claires accesssories and let the teenies loose with a gun lol!

harleyd · 22/06/2009 15:14

i refuse to believe a piercing studio uses a gun for anything!

mindalina · 22/06/2009 15:15

I had mine done with a gun - cost me £3 - bargain and the cartilege in my nose hasn't collapsed either

On the downside, the guy refused to leave the butterfly off the stud and I couldn't get it off myself so it ended up that my step-dad had to use pliers to get it out... That was erm, less fun.

I would say have it done with a needle just cos in my experience, things done with needles are actually much less painful than with guns.

MadreInglese · 22/06/2009 15:16

Is there cartilage in that part of your nose? I prefer the 'instant' idea of a gun piercing rather than the faffing and fiddling of a needle job - is it really that risky? I've had bottom and top of my ears done with a gun before and had no problems, but I don't want to be trashing my face.

And I'd have to have a super sparkly one I think, so it wasn't mistaken for a zit

honestly - it was a while ago (10 years ago or thereabouts) and the piercing studio was a franchise studio above a hair-dressers in town.
BTW ouch to SOH for piercing your own belly button.

EyeballsandherSunburntNorks · 22/06/2009 15:17

A needle? But surely that's slow and hurts like buggery? Gun is so much faster. Zapp! Off you go...

12StoneNeedsToBe10 · 22/06/2009 15:17

the cartilage part of the nose is the bit down the middle between the nostrils is it not? Nostrils are similar to ear-lobes?? I'm no doctor but I'm sure that's right.

MadreInglese · 22/06/2009 15:19

lol, funnily enough I was talking about this in Claires the other day when on a bobble restock (where do they all go??), the girl working in there had a nose stud - she said they only do ears though

Don't think I'd even consider Claire's for ear-piercing tbh

OP posts:
lynniep · 22/06/2009 15:19

yeah SOH I did my belly button too ( was a bit older, about 18 or 19 I think). Wasnt a terribly pretty job - ring stayed in about a fortnight then was to yucky to leave. I was very lucky that it didnt get hideously infected considering I was very, um, lax, about the whole process...(and not a little intoxicated)

Still have a little scar, but nothing you can see unless you look hard.

once again ladies - not one to try at home unless you're really being sterile and using decent needles (and have someone to help or a good set of clamps - I seem to remember enrolling my drunken housemate to pinch my skin - poor bloke)!

lynniep · 22/06/2009 15:23

I believe its pretty quick with a needle if they are doing it properly - they will be very well practised - and whatever it is inside your nose flaps (for want of a better description!) it definately feels like cartilege - very rubbery and not easy to pierce like skin.

ShowOfHands · 22/06/2009 15:25

Where do bobbles go? That's a good question. I think the biros tempt them away with the promise of a night in one of each of your pairs of socks.

My belly button was fine. Only had it taken out as I was wheeled in for an em cs and put it back in the next day.

I can't believe anybody trusts Claire's Accessories with anything other than working out the change of 4 bobbles and a hairband tbh.

harleyd · 22/06/2009 15:27

do you really want something blunt being shot through any part of your body, when you could opt for a needle which is quick and causes less trauma

and omg at the diy bellybutton..theres a huge blood vessel behind there i believe!
