Call me 'sensitive', but I can't bear seeing this Acronym in a Subject line:-

"OMG"

It really puts me off from reading the thread. I'll be honest, I find it offensive from a Christian point of view, knowing what it stands for. I couldn't care less about FFS, arse, etc. or worse (I'm no saint and use the words myself sometimes!).

Thank you. (Preparing myself for 'you can't be serious' etc etc...)

KristinaM how have I proved your point?

Bossykat, yes they are anglo saxon words but go into church and say god, fck and cnt and see which ones make people shocked.

Cristina7 · 09/05/2005 23:30

SleepyJess, I always read your name as SleepyJesus.

Cristina7 · 09/05/2005 23:31

Pruni - I liked your posts. I've met a Christian offended by Xmas and not because of the laziness behind writing it that way...

SleepyJess · 09/05/2005 23:32

Cristina... Bless you my child

CountessDracula · 10/05/2005 08:55

I am more concerned with HappyDaddy's claims to have a c**t than the use of the word god in in an acronym.

twitcher I think you are being a bit over sensitive, you must flinch at every conversation as everyone uses the word all the time IME.

handlemecarefully · 10/05/2005 09:18

Apologies twitcher but I will keep on using it [apologetic shrug]

twitcher · 10/05/2005 09:20

CD, I don't think I'm, "over" sensitive, I just think it saddens someone I love, more than it does me. Note I have not told anyone to STOP using the acronym, just how it makes me feel, I wouldn't be so arrogant as to tell you all what to do.

I used to work with a woman who put her hands over her ears if I said "Oh my god".

Cristina7 · 10/05/2005 09:26

Enid - that's a bit like bolting the door after...however the saying goes.

Blu · 10/05/2005 09:29

I am not a christian, but I do find the constant 'OMG/Jesus' used as an expletive a bit tasteless, because I was brought up in a household and age (I have to admit! ) when it was considered blasphemy - and I don't think other people's religions are mine to appropriate for expletives - and don't want to offend someone if I don't need to.

Swear quite disgracefully otherwise!

Not logical, maybe, but our sensitivities and tastes rarely are.

lou33 · 10/05/2005 09:34

If omg is considered offensive, what about bloody hell?

Enid · 10/05/2005 09:36

or jesus christ?

assumedname · 10/05/2005 09:37

It would not be seen as right to denigrate another religion's beliefs, why should Christians' beliefs be accorded any less respect?

Enid · 10/05/2005 09:38

actually I am not that big on it - I do have a habit of saying 'jesus' but I always feel a bit guilty after...will that do?

DelGirl · 10/05/2005 09:51

it could stand for oh my goodness, have you thought of that? I know it's unlikely but...........

Xena · 10/05/2005 09:54

Just to say that I have read the posts this morning and I wouldn't like people to think that I am taking the moral high ground (I hope pruni that we were just jesting!) I was mearly saying what words grate on me I am not affended by people saying them (unless its DH trying to annoy me) but the phrase does grate on me. I don't let my children say it but then I don't let them swear either.

assumedname · 10/05/2005 09:55

I actually agree with KristinaM's analogy. When I was young the word we used in 'eenie, meenie, minie mo' was n*er. All the kids used it and wouldn't have dreamed it would cause any offence.

In fact, I didn't even know what it meant.

assumedname · 10/05/2005 09:59

Whoops - didn't finish the post.

What I meant to add was - so if we can move on from that sort of mindset, can't we be equally sensitive to religious sensibilities?

Cristina7 · 10/05/2005 18:13

"why should Christians' beliefs be accorded any less respect? "

Or, indeed, any more than to any other belief or opinion.

marthamoo · 10/05/2005 18:49

JoolsToo · 10/05/2005 19:23

well by the billy ringos!

paolosgirl · 10/05/2005 19:27

I'm glad someone else finds blasphemy offensive - I thought it was just me, and I'm not even particularly religious! It's just the thought of using God or Christ's name as a swear word. Crikey - can you imagine the outcry if Allah was used here as a swear word. BTW - I don't ever swear in front of my kids - hate hearing people swear if there are children around.
