"OMG"

It really puts me off from reading the thread. I'll be honest, I find it offensive from a Christian point of view, knowing what it stands for. I couldn't care less about FFS, arse, etc. or worse (I'm no saint and use the words myself sometimes!).

Thank you. (Preparing myself for 'you can't be serious' etc etc...)

Bossykate, somehow I don't think your theory would stand up if you used those words in church!

Heathcliffscathy · 09/05/2005 22:44

[shrieks and falls off sofa at willow]

twitcher · 09/05/2005 22:44

Sophable, I don't know what to say, not shocked just saddened.

I always thought that saying "sticks and stones ... names can never hurt me" was a complete and utter lie.

er, what theory? those words are anglo saxon words, used in middle english and renaissance vernacular - read chaucer, thomas more etc.

KristinaM · 09/05/2005 22:45

Thank you HD - you have made my point for me

Heathcliffscathy · 09/05/2005 22:48

twitcher, sorry, but i stand by it...the god i belive in made c8nts and all the other swearwords and i just don't think they are offensive, problematic...and i believe that blasphemy has far less to do with god than with control by clerical hierarchies...

JoolsToo · 09/05/2005 22:50

but surely sophable if someone told you it offended them you wouldn't use it in their company?

SleepyJess · 09/05/2005 22:50

OMG stands for Oh My Goodness in my book! And it was the only acronym suitable (at least postable!) to express my exitement at meeting Tony Blair last week!

JoolsToo · 09/05/2005 22:52

well next time say 'crikey blimey charlie' and everyone should be happy

SleepyJess · 09/05/2005 22:52

Sophable, yes, I agree with your definition of blasphemy.. it just's another form of religious crowd control. God is not offended by swearing..and no doubt laughs aloud at the crap people try and blame Him for constantly!

Heathcliffscathy · 09/05/2005 22:52

jools...since when have you been afraid of offending people? i totally understand what you're saying but in the context of a discussion about words and phrases that do or do not cause offence? this is a discursive thread no?

SleepyJess · 09/05/2005 22:56

PML @ 'crikey blimey charlie'

blimey sophable - I think you've missed understood me entirely

I was genuinely asking, in a normal situation if you said something, - I don't know - Gd or fck for instance and someone said they were offended - would you continue to use that language at that time? can't see what's wrong with asking that?

I certainly hope I have never offended anyone on here - disagreed definitely but not offend. Just shows you can never tell!

Heathcliffscathy · 09/05/2005 23:04

i wasn't having a go jools!!!!!!!!!

i think like pruni says, i'd just feel uncomfortable...i don't think it's justified, there are a lot worse things to be offended by imo...

you're right in principle...i guess isn't not cool to use terminology that someone has explicitly stated they are offended by...but i'm not at dinner at twitchers house (i bet she is relieved ) i'm on a parenting website where all sorts gets discussed...

tbh, my friends are naughty people that would never take offence at so called blasphemy or swearing, life is too short...

twitcher · 09/05/2005 23:08

going to bed soon, but Pruni, not quite sure why you are getting so angry? I wouldn't be offended or 'metaphorically lynch' you if you returned a Christian's offer to pray for you, it's your right. Can't see why I might be taking the moral high ground either, it's just my pov, same as yours.

Sophable, I have to say that the C word does tend to grate, it's probably the least acceptable swear word in public company, but my sadness was the tshirt associating it with Jesus.

OP posts:
Heathcliffscathy · 09/05/2005 23:10

but twitcher...turn it round: jesus is the fount from which all life emerges????? they are just words...and the fact that the c word is the 'worst' says so much for our misogynist society....

JoolsToo · 09/05/2005 23:11

sophable! phew! thank 'goodness' for that!

SleepyJess · 09/05/2005 23:11

Jesus H Christ this is getting heated innit??

bossykate · 09/05/2005 23:11

sophable, agree with you re misogyny. don't think of it as a swear word, think of it as part of your body.

Heathcliffscathy · 09/05/2005 23:12

wtf does the H stand for...i've never understood that: 'holy'

DW and i think it stands for Harrison

Heathcliffscathy · 09/05/2005 23:15

Pruni :YES at the errant child bit...yes yes yes! what is going on there....there is some beauty and truth in christianity as in all religions...but there is a moral high ground taken which is distinctly UNchristian imo...

SleepyJess · 09/05/2005 23:16

Or Honourable? Henry maybe??
