Does anyone know about house alarms?

I have an ADT one. It's not monitored by them anymore and we no longer have a contract. The control pad is screeching and I can't stop it (no, the access code doesn't work).

What would happen if I disconnected the cable that goes into the back of it?

pleeeeeeease?!

It's still doing it.

Switching the fuse at the fuse box off reset it but it started again a few hours later.

The alarm outside will go off. It'll assume there has been a tamper and set the bells off. You need to a) hope the battery in the bell has gone flat or b) get up to the bell box and take the battery out!

Thanks.

Thing is, the bell didn't go off when I simply tripped the fuse. Which is what makes me think it won't go off if I cut the wire. I had no idea the bell box had a battery in it though. I've been here 7 years and never touched it.

Currently, I have the control pad wrapped in a scarf, a furry hat and a cushion. It is still whining just at an audible level and it's making me even more irritable than usual.

ADT will want over £90 to come out and fix it (it was £90 about 3 years ago and I doubt it's gone down!).

Ah. The battery is backup for when you have a power cut, so it sounds as though your battery is indeed flat. (They are only good for about 5 years) So, theoretically, if you pull the wires out, you won't have a problem.

I know these things, because DH is a burglar alarm engineer, btw!

It's that "theoretically" that worries me

If it doesn't go off when I cut the power though, how can it possibly go off if I disconnect the wires whilst the power is off...? The power is off right now and there is blissful silence.
